Understanding Symbols | English

Welcome to another post on my blog. In today's post, I am going to share the activity that I finished for English. As seen from recent posts on my blog, I've been posting about activities and workshops that I have done in English. In this activity, I had to make a creative presentation that explains what each symbol means. Here is my presentation that I created.

Reflection:

What am I learning?

I am learning to find information from the given symbols.

How does this work show my learning?

This shows my learning by creating a creative presentation showing moments of symbols in the film.

What am I wondering?

Is there any other work to do?

I hope you like my post. Have a nice day at home!! Bye!!

SEXXXY Paragraphs | English

Welcome to another post on my blog. In today's post, I am going to share my task that I'd finished in English. As you know, I'm doing a film study in English of Wonder. I have to write two SEXXXY Paragraphs and post it on my blog. First, we had to choose two screenshots to write two SEXXXY paragraph on.

Our learning outcome was to construct a written response to a visual text.
Success Criteria: I can

  • Construct a paragraph using the SEXXXY structure.
  • Explain how aspects and film techniques are used in a visual text.
  • Use examples from the text to support my thinking.

1:30:00
In this scene, long shots, medium shots, over the shoulder and low angle shots are used appropriately. We can see this when the director used a long shot when Auggie accepted Amos and their friends as his friend. We see this when the director used over the shoulder when Amos and Auggie are talking to the others. This makes the audience feel shocked, confused and surprised because up till this point Amos and his friends used to agree and stay friends with Julian. This was done to show the theme of the importance of friendship and family, because, Amos and his friends be friends with Auggie. This worked well with long shots to show the emotions of all of the characters surviving from the seventh graders. This reminds the viewer of a moment later in the film when it was graduation day and Auggie was named in the service award. All students in Auggie's class supported him when his name was announced. After that incident in the woods, Auggie had been accepted in class.

In this scene, long shots are used adequately. We can see this when the director used a long shot when Auggie and Jack Will were playing with the lightsaber. This makes the audience feel happy and joyful. Because up till this point Jack hadn't played and been at Auggie's house. The director did this to show that Auggie and Jack Will are good friends. Coinciding with the shot was euphoric music in loud key, making the scene even happier. This technique can be juxtaposed with Summer deciding to sit with Auggie instead of the popular girls who were talking behind Auggie's back.

Reflection:

What am I learning?

I am learning to write SEXXXY paragraphs.

How does this work show my learning?

This work shows my learning by writing two SEXXXY paragraphs.

What am I wondering as a result of this learning?

I am wondering how much SEXXY paragraphs do I have to write?

I hope you like my post. Have a nice day!! Bye!!

Workshop 3: How do ‘Lighting & Colour’ enhance the story? | English

Keywords - Atmosphere/Mood
The general feeling of the scene. How we feel watching the scene.

Lighting & Colour

Warm - makes feel comfortable, safe, welcoming.

Cold - feels sterile, clean, futuristic, technological

Bright - feels more lively, energised, vibrant

Dull - feels calm, quiet, boring, old

Natural light - sources are sun/moon, feels like real life

Artificial light - man-made sources, feel unnatural

Palette - the colours used in that shot eg. Nature palette will have colours found in nature like brown/greens.

Brainstorm:

What is happening in this scene?
The scene where August cries to his mum about looking different.
- They don't even talk to me   -   My face is ugly
- It is always going to matter
- Auggie's mum goes into his room to check on him. He tells her others make fun of him and she reassures him.

Theme - Importance of Friends & Family

Shots/Angles

  • Close-ups used to show Auggie's emotions
  • Over the shoulder when mum speaks to show conversation from Auggie's point of view.

Lighting/Colour

  • Warm dark colours - this is a safe & comfortable space for Auggie to cry.
  • Dull colours - sad, lonely, sympathetic, calm, quiet
  • Natural light - is night-time.

Effect on the viewer

  • Sympathetic
  • Sad
  • Sorry
  • Lonely
  • Depressed
  • Mirsrable
  • Downhearted
  • Forlorn

Directors Purpose

Emphasises the sadness of the moment & the importance of Auggie's relationship with his family.

Co-Construct our SEXXXY paragraph:

In the scene where Auggie cries to his mother about being bullied, colour and lighting is used to create an atmosphere of sympathy. We see this through the use of warm and dull colour in the shot. These make the space feel safe & comfortable for Auggie to express his emotions. This makes us understand how Auggie is feeling; miserable, oppressed because he looks different from his pairs. He asks his mum, " will it always matter" which is a feeling most in the audience can relate. This was done to show the theme, the importance of friendship and family, because Auggie learns resilience by talking issues through his him. Combined with this is the use of close up shots to show the emotions and tears on Auggie's face. This reminds the viewer of a moment later in the story where Auggie is upset because his sister Via doesn't want him to go to her play. Just like this scene, Auggie runs to his room upset and a member of his family comes to reassures him.

Workshop 2: The Impact of Angles, Movement & Shots | English

Welcome to another post on my blog. In today's post, I am sharing you my next workshop for English. I hope you like it.

Brainstorm:

Shot 1: Jack & Julian are fighting because Jack had chosen to stand up to Julien after he called Auggie a freak.

Jack Will & Julian fighting - 1.06

Shots/Angles:

  • Dutch Tilt - something is wrong in the scene
  • Low Angle - makes person on top look stronger - Jack & person below look weak & vulnerable - Julian

Viewers reaction

→ Concerned, worried, surprised
→ Jack had never stood up for Auggie before
→ Jack usually agrees with Julian.

Directors Purpose

→ Close-up used to make us feel part of the fight, see the characters emotions & reactions.
→ Uses techniques to build our concern/shock.

Other techniques

→ Slow-motion - used to show us the details in the fight - too fast otherwise.
→ Music - minor, slow tempo, dynamics increases from quite to help us focus & create atmosphere.

Co-Construct our SEXXXY paragraph:

S - In the fight scene between Julian and Jack, camera angles are used effectively to draw the viewer into the scene.

E - This is demonstrated through the use of low angles, close-ups and dutch tilt shots. The low angle shot makes Jack look stronger and more aggressive, whilst Julian looks weak & vulnerable below him.

X -  This makes the audience feel concerned, shocked and surprised because up till this point Jack had always agreed with Julian.

X - The director did this to draw the viewer into the event and highlight Jack's struggle to choose between being right or being popular.

X -  Combined with this is the use of slow-motion and music which help us to see details on the characters faces and recognise their emotional reactions.

Y -  This can be compared to the use of close-up shots at the start of the film when we first meet Auggie. They are both used to show us a small part of a bigger moment.

A Guide to the Digestive System | Biology

Welcome to another post on my blog. In today's post, I am going to share you my guide to the Digestive System. The last lesson in Biology, we had to cut out the paper body parts and then stick where it should be, label them and write two facts about that part.

I've also made a slide show explaining the parts of the digestive system.

I hope you learnt something new and liked my post. Have a cool day!! Bye!!

Workshop 1: Unpacking the Themes & Ideas | English

Welcome to another post on my blog. In today's post, I am sharing you my workshop for English. I hope you like it.

Kindness

Definition - A verbal or physical action that is nice. Caring. Using manners. Respect.

Example 1

  • When Jack sticks up for Auggie during the fight scene with Julian.
  • Shows Kindness - Sticking up for a friend
    • Not letting others talk badly about friends.
    • Jack has previously not been kind, talked about Auggie behind his back.
  • Important because
    • helps people make friends
    • makes people feel accepted/included
    • if there wasn't kindness Auggie wouldn't have made any friends, grown his self-confidence to be able to take off his helmet, feel included at Beeker Prep.
Example 2

When Amos & the others help Jack & Auggie fight the 7th Graders.

Importance of Friendship & Family

Definition - People who you can trust, the trust of others, support systems, people you feel safe with, help build resilience.

Example 1

When the Pullman's dog dies.

  • Brings family together to grieve
  • Show support for one another
  • Auggie & Via put aside their argument to look after each other.

Example 2

Fight at the Nature Reserve where Auggie and the other boys come together to rescue Jack & Auggie from the 7th Graders.

  • Support, because they stand up for each other
  • Trust, the boys come to help them, they don't abandon each other
  • Resilence, the boys support each other to move forward, they are all friends now.

Important to the Story

  • Good relationships with friends help Auggie build trust & feel safe. He takes the helmet off.
  • His friendship with Summer teaches him resilience, trust & forgiveness.
  • His family are always there to support him when things go wrong at school.

Struggle between being right and being popular

Definition - Being right means showing integrity - doing the right thing even no one is watching. Being popular means agreeing with/acting in a way others want you to, even when you don't agree.

Example 1

When Jack chose to stay with Auggie as his science partner instead of Julian.

  • Jack chose right over popular. Julian wanted to leave Auggie out & Jack chose not to.
  • In the past, Jack had picked friendship with Julian over Auggie.

Example 2

When Summer decides to sit with Auggie instead of the popular girls who were talking behind Auggie's back.
  • Summer chose right - not to sit and talk nasty with her friends, but to go and sit with Auggie who was alone.
  • Auggie doesn't trust her first because of Jack.
  • Summer stays anyway & helps Auggie - link to the importance of friendships.

Important to the Story

  • The concept is relatable, everyone has to experience this, so it helps the viewer to engage with the story.
  • Makes kindness/relationships more obvious when we've seen the persons struggle

Theme Guide - Wonder | English

Welcome to another post on my blog. In today's post, I am going to share my theme guide for English. Last week, we watched a movie named 'Wonder'. We then watched it again and analyse it. After analysing the movie, we had to complete an activity from four activities.

It was about themes and ideas from the movie. I had chosen the 'Theme Guide', as seen from the title. I had to explain how each theme is shown in the film and give them times to stop and look, quotes and key moments to watch for. We had to present it creatively.

There were three themes,

  • Kindness
  • Family
  • Doing the Right Thing (Popularity)

What am I learning?
I am learning to analyse the film, Wonder.

How does this work show my learning?
This work shows my learning by creating a poster which shares the audience the themes used in the film.

What am I wondering as a result of my learning?
I am wondering nothing.

I hope you liked my post. Have a cool day!! Bye!!

Viewing Notes 1 - Wonder | English

Structure:

Narrators change the perspective of the viewer

  1. Auggie (August)
  2. Via
  3. Jack-Will
  4. Miranda
  5. Auggie

Opening Scene: 0:36 - 1:46

Camera Shots/Angles:

Eye Level, close up (to make us think us think Auggie is in space, we later zoom out to see we are in his bedroom.

Special Effects:

Slow-motion of Auggie jumping because it makes more realistic as, in space, there is no gravity in space so people move slower.

Music/Sound:

Diagetic - ground control talking over radio, gives us the idea we are in space.

Music tempo starts slow with quiet dynamic to match the slow-mo of outer space. Tempo picks up when we zoom out to see Auggie in his room.

Symbols:

Astronaut helmet. Represents the physical barrier Auggie puts between himself and others; even when its off people don't really see him.

August's Dad - Nate

'It's like leading a lamb to the slaughter'

Science Classroom Scene - 7:30 - 9:28

Camera Angle/Shot

Open high angle wide shot, makes the room look big & scary & the students look weak & vulnerable.

Body Language

Auggie walks with shoulders hunched, slouched posture, head down. This makes him look smaller & weaker. Trying not to be noticed.

Auggie's First Class - 14:31

Camera Angle/Shot

Over the shoulder, eye-level - between Julian & Auggie. Cuts between close-ups of Auggie to show emotions & mid shots of Julian & the rest of the class. Makes it feel like Auggie is alone.

Summer - 'When given the choice between being right & being kind. Choose kind.'

StarWars Symbols:

  • Julien references Dark Sideous
  • Auggie has a padewon braid (apprentice Jedi)

StarWars Moments:

Chewbacca → 32:40 → Shows us Auggie, understands why people, but how he wishes they'd deal with it.

Everyone in the Star Wars universe looks strange, weird & deformed so no one treats them differently. This would be a safe place for Auggie because no one would stare.

Auggie - 'I'm sorry if my starring made you uncomfortable'

Julian & Jack Fight Scene - 1:06:06 - 1:07:40

Camera Shots/Angles:

Over the shoulder - as Jack punches Julian, makes us feel part of the event.

Low Angle - during the fight - makes the person on the top look stronger.

Dutch Tilt - lockers on angle, used to show something isn't right in the world.

Special Effects:

Slow-motion - makes easier to see, especially emotions, also makes it feel more intense.

Music/Sound:

Tempo-slow, minor = sad, dynamics = quiet = intense

Music comes in with voice over - makes it feel reflective

Fight at the Nature Reserve Scene - 1:29:40 - 1:32:35

Camera Shots/Angles:

High Angle Shot - down onto the bully, makes him look weak & vulnerable while Auggie, Jack, Amos & the others look strong.

Music:

Used to build tension or suspense.

Tempo - very quick rhythm

Dynamics - starts quiet but gets louder as boys start running - builds anxiety

Chords - minor - looked at with tempo makes it feel anxious.

Themes:

Importance of friendship & family
Kindness

Conclusion/Ending - 1:40:26

Camera Shots/Angles:

Tilt Shot - as Auggie bows

We are shown a similar scene to the opening, only this time the background is actual space rather than a painting on Auggies bedroom wall.

Finishes with a repeat of the astronaut jump arms up into the shot.

Music:

Major key - happy

Tempo - fast - gives energy

Dynamics - loud - gives energy

It makes the viewer feel happy about the ending!

Whereas the start Auggie was imagining himself as happy, at the end he actually is happy which is why the background of the scene is now realistic.

Cheeseburger Experiment | Biology

Welcome to another post on my blog. In today's post, I am going to share the experiment that I've done in Biology today. I had to do the experiment myself.

Aim: To test if a sample of food contains complex sugar, simple sugar and protein.

Hypothesis: I think that it will have all of

Bread
Meat
Cheese
Pickle

Will all change colour.

Equipment:

Complex Sugar:
  1. Test Tube
  2. Food Sample
  3. Iodine Solution

Simple Sugar:
  1. Water Bath
  2. Test Tube Tongs
  3. Benedict's Solution
  4. A Sample of Food

Protein:
  1. Test Tube
  2. Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)
  3. Copper Sulfate (CuSO4)
  4. Food Sample

Method:

Complex Sugar:
  1. Place about 2 ml of sample in a test tube.
  2. Add 3-5 drops of iodine and mix.

Simple Sugar:
  1. Place about 2ml of the sample into a test tube and then add 5 drops of Benedict's Solution.
  2. Heat with a hot water bath until it changes colour.

Protein:
  1. Place about 2 ml of the sample into a test tube and add 5 drops of sodium hydroxide.
  2. Add 5 drops of copper sulfate.
  3. Shake the test tube gently from side to side.

Results:

Complex Sugar:
Bread has complex sugar. Meat doesn't have complex sugar. Cheese doesn't have complex sugar. Pickle has complex sugar.

Simple Sugar:
Bread is a simple sugar. Meat is not simple sugar. Cheese is not a simple sugar. Pickle is a simple sugar.

Protein:
Bread is not protein. I'll update the rest as soon as possible.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, my hypothesis didn't get all correct except some of them, like, meat, cheese and bread (in protein). What I had learnt in this experiment is that meat and cheese do not have complex or simple sugar.

Testing for Protein | Biology

Welcome to another post on my blog. In today's post, I am going to share the experiment that I've done in Biology today. I had to do the experiment myself.

Aim: To test if a sample of food contains protein.

Hypothesis: I think that in the;

Glucose - is not going to change colour.
Apple - is going to change colour
Bread - is not going to change colour.
Potato - is not going to change colour
Egg - is not going to change colour.
Milk - is going to change colour.

Equipment:

  1. Test Tube
  2. Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)
  3. Copper Sulfate (CuSO4)
  4. Food Sample

Method

Method:

  1. Place about 2 ml of the sample into a test tube and add 5 drops of sodium hydroxide.
  2. Add 5 drops of copper sulfate.
  3. Shake the test tube gently from side to side.

Results:

First, our teacher had tested the potato. After adding the potato in the test tube, she added 5 drops of sodium hydroxide. Then added 5 drops of copper sulfate. In my hypothesis, I had written that it is not going to change colour. Well, it really didn't change colour. Because it is not a protein food.

Secondly, the apple was tested. In my hypothesis, I wrote that it is not going to change colour, because it is not a protein. My hypothesis was right. It didn't change colour.

Thirdly, milk was tested. I had written in my hypothesis was that 'milk is going to change colour'. Because milk has got protein. Again, my hypothesis was right, it changed colour to protein.

Because we didn't have egg, we didn't test it out. But what I'd written in my hypothesis was that egg is not going to change colour. Well, it did change colour, which I had learnt.

The fourth test was the bread, I had written that bread is not going to change colour. Luckily, I was right and it didn't change colour. I knew that the bread didn't have protein.

The last test that was tested was glucose or sugar. I had written that sugar wasn't going to change colour because it hadn't had any protein in it.

Conclusion:

The experiment was really well done and I'd learnt something new. We had tested 5/6 samples of food. From my hypothesis that I had written earlier, I had got 4/5 or 80% of my hypothesis correct, which was really good.

Testing for Simple Sugars | Biology

Welcome to another post on my blog. In today's post, I am going to share the experiment that I've done in Biology today. I had to do the experiment myself.

Aim: To test a sample of food to determine whether it contains simple sugars.

Hypothesis: I think that in the;

Glucose - it might change colour because it can be any simple or complex sugar.
Apple - it will change colour because it is a carbohydrate (sugary)
Bread - it might change colour.
Potato - it won't change colour.
Egg - might change colour.
Milk - won't change colour.

Equipment:

Method

  1. Water Bath
  2. Test Tube Tongs
  3. Benedict's Solution
  4. A Sample of Food

Method:

  1. Place about 2ml of the sample into a test tube and then add 5 drops of Benedict's Solution.
  2. Heat with a hot water bath until it changes colour.

Results:

What I observed is that every sample changed colour except,

We first got the apple, potato and bread and put it in the test tube. Next, we had put 5 drops of solution.

Adding Benedict's Solution into a small piece of potato

Next, we put the three test tubes in the hot water bath until it changes colour. We put three test tubes into two beakers with hot water.

Hot Water Bath

What I found out weird that the egg had changed colour too! Because I wasn't sure if it was going to change colour or not.

Conclusion:

My experiment worked really well. I am not sure if I got the hypothesis right or wrong because I mostly had written: "might".

I hope you liked my post. Have a cool day!! Bye!!

The Language of Film | English

Welcome to another post on my blog. In today's post, I am going to share you my dictionary of the language of film.

What am I learning? - I am learning to learn about film study and it's languages.

How does this work show my learning? - This shows my learning because I've typed every word to its definition.

What am I wondering as a result of this learning? - If there is another language of film.

Thanks for reading my post. I hope you liked my post. Have a nice day. Bye!!

Testing for Complex Sugars | Biology

Welcome to another post on my blog. In today's post, I am going to share the experiment that I've done in Biology today. I had to do the experiment with a pair.

Aim: To test if a sample of food contains complex sugars.

Hypothesis: I think that in the;

Glucose - won't change colour because it is a simple sugar.
Apple - won't change colour because it's also a simple sugar.
Bread - will change because it is complex sugar.
Potato - will also change colour because it is complex sugar.
Egg - it might have simple sugar or complex sugar because it's protein.
Milk - it might have simple sugar or complex sugar because it's also protein.

Equipment:

  1. Test Tube
  2. Food Sample
  3. Iodine Solution

Image result for iodine science

Method:

  1. Place about 2 ml of sample in a test tube.
  2. Add 3-5 drops of iodine and mix.

The Bread
Results:

First, we tested the bread. From my hypothesis, I had predicted that bread is complex sugar. When we had tested the bread with the iodine, it changed colour because it was complex sugar. It changed the colour to black.

Secondly, I tested the apple. What I wrote in my hypothesis, that it won't change the colour because it is a simple sugar. But, actually, it changed colour, so apple is complex sugar. It changed the colour to dark green.

Apple
Potato
Glucose
(Sugar)
Egg
Thirdly, I tested the potato. According to my hypothesis, I had written that the potato will change colour because it is complex sugar. Actually, my hypothesis was right, it had changed colour because it was complex sugar.

Next, we had tested glucose (sugar). From my hypothesis, I had written that it won't change colour because it is a simple sugar. I couldn't tell if it was or not because what I could see was iodine.

After glucose, we had tested the egg. From my hypothesis, I guessed that it might or might not change because it's protein. This test was similar to the last one, I couldn't tell because what I could see was iodine.

Lastly, we tested the milk. From my hypothesis, I had written that it might change colour or not because it's protein.

Conclusion

In conclusion, my hypothesis was 50% correct, it's okay because there are no right or wrong answers in the hypothesis. From the hypothesis, it is what I thought about this type of food.

What I had written in my hypothesis, is that glucose won't change colour, because it's a simple sugar. But, actually, I was wrong, which is good because I had learnt something new.

The next food that I had written about was an apple. I had written that it won't change colour, but it actually did.

The third food that I had tested was the bread. I had written that it will change colour because it's a complex sugar, which was correct.

The fourth food that I had tested was the potato. I had written that it will change colour because it's a complex sugar, which was correct.

The fifth food that I tested was the egg. I couldn't tell if it changed the colour or not, so I didn't know.

The last food that I tested was the milk. When iodine was added, it diluted slightly, but it didn't change colour. So, milk is not complex sugar.

What I observed that all of the food samples that we had tested were all complex sugars.

What I've learnt in this experiment is that glucose, apple and bread is complex sugar.

Self Directed Learners | Inside and Out

Welcome to another post on my blog. In today's post, I am going to share you my matrix which I have assessed my self about what I've done well or need to achieve (need to work on). I've started a new hurumanu, called Inside Out, which is about English and Biology.

The green which I have highlighted is what I've done well and the yellow is what I need to achieve. I need to write three ways to improve what I've chosen.

I have chosen 'Ask for feedback when I am unsure.'

  1. When I need help or unsure if this is right or not, I can ask people around me.
  2. If I need some help from friends or pairs, I can ask them.
  3. If I've done some type of writing, my friends, pairs, or teachers can give me some next steps for next time.
I hope you like my post. Have a cool day!! Bye!!
