Discovery | Health

For the past few weeks in Health, we started working on a new unit called Discovery. We are exploring areas of health which interests us. It is also about showing our understanding of key health skills. First, we had to choose two topics to choose from the ones listed or any relevant health topic that is approved by the teacher. The first topic I chose was 'Effects of gaming on the mind & body'. We could work independently or in pairs. I chose to work by myself.

Success Criteria:
  1. You have linked your answers to the key concepts
  2. You have answered all 5 BIG questions in detail
  3. You have answered all 5 BIG questions in detail
  4. Your work is well presented and you are proud of it

Firstly, we had to choose our five big questions, which need to be approved, and then write the answer in detail. The answer needs strategies to manage our chosen topic. Next, we need to make or create an activity to do with our topic, which includes pictures and a high level of presentation of your findings.

I chose to create a Kahoot! to show my work. The Kahoot! has 11 questions about and relating to 'Effects of gaming on the mind & body'. I was thinking to create a Kahoot! or make a website, but I chose to create a Kahoot! for my first topic and a website for my next topic.

Here are some of my Kahoot! questions, by a screenshot.

After creating the Kahoot!, we had to describe 3 ways to improve and manage your chosen health issue if you or a friend were to experience it. Explain how it will improve wellbeing in the short term and long term. Here are my strategies.

Strategies

What the strategies are

What areas of wellbeing the strategy will improve and how

Short term and/or long term

Strategy 1

Tell them what are the negative outcomes if you play games and some proof to they can understand.

Taha Tinana - Physical, Taha Hinengaro - Mental & Emotional,

Short term

Strategy 2

If they are playing games because they are stressed or being bullied, tell them to say to their parents.

Taha Hinengaro - Mental & Emotional, Taha Whānau - Social

Short term

Strategy 3

If they can’t stop playing, then they can set a limit of playing an hour a day, then 50 min, then 40 min, etc. This will reduce the time playing games and use that time doing physical work.

Taha Tinana - Physical, Taha Hinengaro - Mental & Emotional

Long Term

We have learned that these strategies help overcome gaming and are helpful to use if you are addicted to games and cannot stop gaming.

It was challenging at the start because I was quite distracted and needed to do my work. I coped with the challenge by concentrating on my work and finishing my work quickly. Next time I will try to have more than 11 questions in my Kahoot! I am really proud of finishing my Kahoot! quickly and had some time free time.

The Bystander Effect | Health

Welcome to another post. Today, in Health, we looked at a video about the Bystander Effect.

The Bystander Effect

—The term bystander effect refers to the phenomenon in which the greater the number of people present, the less likely people are to help a person in distress.

What is meant by the bystander effect? Why do you think it occurs?

It means watching and standing the incident happen and no one helps. They sit in the background pretending they don’t see the problem. I think that this occurs because no one is not brave enough to support the victim. People are too embarrassed to help the person in need, one, no one basically has time to help others and they do their own thing. Two, the bystander ignores the situation and moves on. Three, who couldn’t help due to a reason. For example, kids, they might think that they are just kids and cannot do anything. Scared, the bystander could be scared to help, maybe drunk.

What is an ethical bystander?

An ethical bystander, or an outstander, is one who stands up for what they know is the right thing to do and help the victim who needs help.

Are Online Relationships Important?

This Is What Relationship Initiation Looks Like Online ...
This Is What Relationship Initiation Looks Like Online
Credit: https://www.psychologytoday.com/nz/blog/dating-in-the-digital-age/201903/is-what-relationship-initiation-looks-online

Welcome to another post on my blog. Today, in Health, we had to debate about, 'Online relationships are not as important as real-life relationships'. We had to write our debate on our blog.

Some people may think that online relationships are as important than real-life relationships, this may be because they can interact with people any time and anywhere, which incorporates online video chat and online fun. Another point of view is dangers if you are in a relationship with someone you don't know it can be dangerous. It is more dangerous if you don't know how they look, what they do, etc.

But on the other hand, some people believe that real-life relationships are more than online relationships, this may be because you can't have fun going to places together than having fun online. Among real-life relationships, you can go to places, eat together and do other things together in real. You can go to the ice-cream store and have fun talking beside each other.

In conclusion, I think that 'online relationships are not as important as real-life relationships' because it may not be safe and there is a different feeling to be present with them rather online.

Positive Thoughts and Self-Talk | Health

Welcome to another post on my blog. I am going to share the topic that I completed for Health. After finishing Hauora/Wellbeing we go on the second unit of Health, Staying Mentally Healthy.

First, we had to pick topics interest us. Then, we need to create our own learning outcomes that relate to our chosen topic. This needs to be written out on our work to show your learning for each topic that we complete. After that, we need to show our learning by following the task instructions.

We had to choose from.

I chose Positive thoughts and self-talk. We were given a few tasks to do in our chosen topic. As in my topic, I had to complete the left and right side of tasks.

L.H.S

The task was to:
  1. Decide on how you will show your learning.
  2. State what the meaning of positive thoughts and positive self talk are (define these two words).
  3. State what the benefits of positive thoughts and self talk are.

I chose to show my learning on my blog. Here is my work.

Definition of Positive thinking and positive self-talk.

Positive thinking
Positive thinking is a mental and emotional attitude in which you think or expect something good and favourable results. Positive thinking is a process of creating thoughts which create and transform energy into reality. It also means trying over again and not accepting defeat. Positive thinking means having a good and positive attitude. Focusing on the positive side of the situation and not the negative.

Positive Self-talk

Positive self-talk makes you feel good about yourself and things. It’s like having a voice in your head that always looks on the good side. On the other side, negative self-talks make people miserable and can also change their improvement from mental health issues.

Benefits of Positive thinking and Positive self-talk

Positive thinking

There are benefits of positive thinking, such as health benefits. Positive thinking can help your health too like stress. Positive thinking can lower levels of distress. Having increased life san and lower rates of depression. Feeling stronger, as confidence and self-esteem increases. A positive mood can lead to many physical health benefits such as blood pressure, it can lower blood pressure.

Positive self-talk

There are some benefits and techniques for increasing positive self-talk, including

  • Improved immune function
  • Reduced pain
  • Less stress and distress
  • Greater life satisfaction
  • Reduced risk for death
  • Better physical wellbeing

These all can lead to a nice and happy life.

R.H.S

The task was to:

  • Watch one of these clips and explain what was said in them AND why it is important for your mental health to do this.

  • Explain what areas of Hauora would be enhanced by reading the positive thoughts AND why.
  • Create a poster that has a bunch of positive thoughts all over it.

I chose the 2nd clip.

In the clip, it said to use positive self-talk instead of negative self-talk when faced in a challenge. Control yourself and be positive when facing the challenge and never give up. This is important for mental health because you can get focused on the challenge and overcome it.

One 2010 study shows optimists have a better quality of life. Research shows that positive self-talk can improve:

  • Stress Management
  • Wellbeing
  • Self-esteem
  • Reduce any symptoms of anxiety, depression and personality disorders.
  • Improve your body image
  • Can help treat people with eating disorders.

Self-talk can enhance performance and wellbeing.

It can improve and enhance performance of our physical wellbeing (Taha Tinana). Research shows that self-talk can help athletes with performance. It may support with endurance or to power through a set of heavyweights.

Self-talk can also improve our mental & emotional wellbeing (Taha Hinengaro). Self-talk can help students and workers by doing their work or completing their work. Your thoughts are the cause of your emotions and mood. The communications you have with yourself can be destructive or beneficial. They determine how you feel about yourself and how you react to situations in your life. People are becoming more conscious that positive self-talk is a powerful tool for developing your self-confidence and restraining negative emotions.

Next, we had to create a poster that has a bunch of positive thoughts all over it. Here is my poster. I hope you like it.

Work Towards Wellbeing | Health

Welcome to another post on my blog. In today's post, I am going to share the assessment that I had done. To the assignment is to choose one of the criteria, one of the options was to create a blog. I hope you like it!!

Hauora is a health model developed by Professor Mason Durrie. The Maori philosophy towards health is based on a wellness model. It is seen as a four-sided concept representing four dimensions of life or the Te Whare Tapa Wha.

Taha Tinana - Physical
Taha Hinengaro - Mental & Emotional
Taha Whanau - Social
Taha Wairua - Spiritual

All the dimensions of the Te Whare Tapa Wha are related in some way. Such as Taha Tinana related to Taha Hinengaro by exercising in anxiety and depression. Exercise helps to improve energy level, mood and sleep.

Taha Tinana

Physical Wellbeing

This refers to physical wellbeing, taking care of your body, being fit and healthy. It is the dimension of health and wellbeing which cannot be separated from all others. Taha Tinana is the physical body, its growth and development. It’s also the ability to function and move. Physical activity keeps the body strong, improves mental health. It also improves performance, focus, sleep and energy levels. It is a way of caring for our body. One way to do physical wellbeing is to try yoga. Yoga improves your physical and mental wellbeing. Yoga helps reduce stress and anxiety. It additionally enhances your mood and overall feeling of wellbeing. Practising yoga leads to improving flexibility, balance, range of strength and motion.

Taha Tinana also relates to Taha Hinengaro, Mental & Emotional wellbeing by exercising in anxiety and depression. Exercise helps to improve energy level, mood and sleep. These effects help to improve resilience and self-confidence. Exercise can reduce anxiety, improve relationships and improve body image.

Taha Hinengaro

Mental & Emotional Wellbeing

Focuses on mental wellbeing. It is to be able to understand & manage your emotions. They are able to work productively and can contribute positively to their community. It is a dimension which needs to be kept in mind. Mental & Emotional wellbeing is about your thoughts, feelings, mind and heart. It’s about how you feel, how well you think and communicate. Taha Hinengaro is important regardless if you’ve not experienced mental illness or distress.

The most common feeling experienced by young people as children and teens is anxiety. Lots of children feel sad or upset some of the time.

Taha Whānau

Social Wellbeing

Taha Whānau gives you a sense of belonging, who you care and who you share your life with. It’s about family, friendships, personal relationships and the people you care about. Spending time with whanau, doing things for them and getting involved gives a feeling of connection, purpose and wellbeing, it is an important role in your wellbeing. Having social support, getting well with others and being able to maintain healthy relationships.

Relationships also means relationships with family too, parents, siblings, caregivers. Can also be learning something from a family member too. Taha Whānau also includes friends and the community. An example of friends is to spend time with a friend talking or doing things. For the community, there could be being part of the community or participating in a community event. Another example is to help someone with a problem.

Taha Wairua

Spiritual Wellbeing

Taha Wairua is the values and beliefs that means the way we live, our personal identity and self-awareness, self-esteem. Spiritual wellbeing includes our culture, religion, passions, customs, dreams and goals. It is who and what we are and where we have come from. Taha Wairua also includes kindness, believing in ‘treating others the way you want you to be treated’.

People have different views of taha wairua. For some, taha wairua is the capacity for religious or faith beliefs. For some others, taha wairua is an internal connection to the universe or the sacred. There is no right or wrong way to think or experience spiritual wellbeing, it is also an important part of your mental wellbeing.

There are ways which can affect all dimensions in our wellbeing. I’ve chosen Scenario 1. It includes Taha Hinengaro and Taha Whānau. For Taha Hinengaro (Mental & Emotional wellbeing), being lonely. Which includes being less confident, if you don’t have friends, you are lonely, less confident and can’t express your feeling to any friends. Having friends has lots of benefits such as life challenges, if there is a challenge in life, friends can help you if you have no one else. Also, not able to understand & manage emotions and be able to communicate thoughts and feelings. The second dimension in the scenario is Taha Whānau, Social wellbeing. This also relates to Taha Hinengaro, emotions and feelings. Social wellbeing is about family, friends and relationships. Some impacts on social wellbeing are not having good relationships. It increases stress and doesn’t make us healthy. You don’t get well with others and be alone and lonely.

There are some strategies that will support wellbeing. Let’s start with Mental and Emotional wellbeing.

  1. Able to acknowledge and express thoughts and feelings
  2. To be able to communicate thoughts and feelings to others
  3. To be able to understand & manage your emotions

Social wellbeing is used in scenario 1 too. There are a few strategies to support Taha Wairua.

  1. Feel a sense of belonging and social connection.
  2. Having social support
  3. Getting well with others

Teamwork Reflection | Health

Welcome to another post on my blog. In today's post, I am going to share you my reflection from the last lesson on health. For the past few lessons in health, we have been planning the teamwork activity that we had to run for the class. We were given a video to watch and we had to choose one team activity to run for the class.

We had to answer some questions for the reflection;

What went well/good in the previous lesson?

Everyone contributed to the activities by each group. There were no problems, everyone had fun. Things went out smoothly.

What did not go well in the previous lesson?

The weather was quite windy, so we had to do all of the activities inside the class.

How did you display kindness? Confidence? Goals?

I displayed kindness by listening to the groups explaining and demonstrating the activities. I had a bit confidence explaining the activity. My goal was to get the water balloon the furthest with my partner catching it.

I hope you like my post. Have a cool day!! Bye!!

Learning Reflection | Health

Welcome to another post on my blog. In today's post, I am going to share my learning reflection so far on health. A week ago (10 Feb), we started health.

For health, we (our class) are learning Wellbeing or Hauora in Maori. Firstly, we learnt, what is Hauora mean? Also, it's four areas. 'All areas need to be “well” or “working” to be 100% healthy'.

The four areas are if you don't know,

  • Physical - Taha Tinana
  • Social - Taha Whanau
  • Mental/Emotional - Taha Hinengaro
  • Te Whare Tapa Wha
  • Spiritual - Taha Wairua

Next, we did the Hauora Mix & Match cards, where we had to highlight the four wellbeing areas into different colours, then, matched them into the four wellbeing areas.

After doing that activity, we had wrote (as a class) about, 'What is Hauora?' After writing lots of words about the four wellbeing areas or the 'Te Whare Tapa Wha'. We had wrote about our current Hauora, which means that how are we (I) showing these four dimensions. Because we hadn't finished the 'Current Hauora' activity, we continued it today.

In today's lesson, we had completed the 'Current Hauora' activity and wrote some Hauora Interactions that we have. Our health teacher had taught us that our 'Current Hauora' changes every day of what we are feeling. I had written about sleep and food.

I had to answer some questions, the reason I created this blog post.

How did you participate during this lesson?

I participated well because I was doing my work and finishing it. I contributed by asking questions. Next time, I will try to work extra harder and finish my work quicker than today.

What is the current state of your hauora?

My wellbeing is well because I am showing all of the dimensions of Hauora. The wellbeing that I need to work more on is Physical Wellbeing, I need to do more physical activity like sport. I could do this by doing physical activity when I am free.

I hope you like my post on my blog. Have a cool day!! Bye!!
