Welcome to another post on my blog. In today's post, I am going to share the assessment that I had done. To the assignment is to choose one of the criteria, one of the options was to create a blog. I hope you like it!!

Hauora is a health model developed by Professor Mason Durrie. The Maori philosophy towards health is based on a wellness model. It is seen as a four-sided concept representing four dimensions of life or the Te Whare Tapa Wha.

Taha Tinana - Physical

Taha Hinengaro - Mental & Emotional

Taha Whanau - Social

Taha Wairua - Spiritual

All the dimensions of the Te Whare Tapa Wha are related in some way. Such as Taha Tinana related to Taha Hinengaro by exercising in anxiety and depression. Exercise helps to improve energy level, mood and sleep. 

Taha Tinana

Physical Wellbeing

This refers to physical wellbeing, taking care of your body, being fit and healthy. It is the dimension of health and wellbeing which cannot be separated from all others. Taha Tinana is the physical body, its growth and development. It’s also the ability to function and move. Physical activity keeps the body strong, improves mental health. It also improves performance, focus, sleep and energy levels. It is a way of caring for our body. One way to do physical wellbeing is to try yoga. Yoga improves your physical and mental wellbeing. Yoga helps reduce stress and anxiety. It additionally enhances your mood and overall feeling of wellbeing. Practising yoga leads to improving flexibility, balance, range of strength and motion. 

Taha Tinana also relates to Taha Hinengaro, Mental & Emotional wellbeing by exercising in anxiety and depression. Exercise helps to improve energy level, mood and sleep. These effects help to improve resilience and self-confidence. Exercise can reduce anxiety, improve relationships and improve body image.

Mental & Emotional Wellbeing

Focuses on mental wellbeing. It is to be able to understand & manage your emotions. They are able to work productively and can contribute positively to their community. It is a dimension which needs to be kept in mind. Mental & Emotional wellbeing is about your thoughts, feelings, mind and heart. It’s about how you feel, how well you think and communicate. Taha Hinengaro is important regardless if you’ve not experienced mental illness or distress. 

The most common feeling experienced by young people as children and teens is anxiety. Lots of children feel sad or upset some of the time. 

Taha Whānau

Social Wellbeing

Taha Whānau gives you a sense of belonging, who you care and who you share your life with. It’s about family, friendships, personal relationships and the people you care about. Spending time with whanau, doing things for them and getting involved gives a feeling of connection, purpose and wellbeing, it is an important role in your wellbeing. Having social support, getting well with others and being able to maintain healthy relationships. 

Relationships also means relationships with family too, parents, siblings, caregivers. Can also be learning something from a family member too. Taha Whānau also includes friends and the community. An example of friends is to spend time with a friend talking or doing things. For the community, there could be being part of the community or participating in a community event. Another example is to help someone with a problem.

Taha Wairua

Spiritual Wellbeing

Taha Wairua is the values and beliefs that means the way we live, our personal identity and self-awareness, self-esteem. Spiritual wellbeing includes our culture, religion, passions, customs, dreams and goals. It is who and what we are and where we have come from. Taha Wairua also includes kindness, believing in ‘treating others the way you want you to be treated’. 

People have different views of taha wairua. For some, taha wairua is the capacity for religious or faith beliefs. For some others, taha wairua is an internal connection to the universe or the sacred. There is no right or wrong way to think or experience spiritual wellbeing, it is also an important part of your mental wellbeing.

There are ways which can affect all dimensions in our wellbeing. I’ve chosen Scenario 1. It includes Taha Hinengaro and Taha Whānau. For Taha Hinengaro (Mental & Emotional wellbeing), being lonely. Which includes being less confident, if you don’t have friends, you are lonely, less confident and can’t express your feeling to any friends. Having friends has lots of benefits such as life challenges, if there is a challenge in life, friends can help you if you have no one else. Also, not able to understand & manage emotions and be able to communicate thoughts and feelings. The second dimension in the scenario is Taha Whānau, Social wellbeing. This also relates to Taha Hinengaro, emotions and feelings. Social wellbeing is about family, friends and relationships. Some impacts on social wellbeing are not having good relationships. It increases stress and doesn’t make us healthy. You don’t get well with others and be alone and lonely.

There are some strategies that will support wellbeing. Let’s start with Mental and Emotional wellbeing. 

1. Able to acknowledge and express thoughts and feelings
2. To be able to communicate thoughts and feelings to others
3. To be able to understand & manage your emotions

Social wellbeing is used in scenario 1 too. There are a few strategies to support Taha Wairua.

1. Feel a sense of belonging and social connection.
2. Having social support
3. Getting well with others

Ancient to Contemporary Money | Business Studies

Welcome to another post on my blog. In today's post, I am going to share my activity that I have completed. We had to investigate three forms of money. One from the ancient history, one from the 20th century and one from the 21st century. Then, we had to think of a currency that would be possible for the future.

Lydian Lion

The Lydian Lion is known as the world's oldest coin. This coin is made of gold and silver alloy, it was minted by Kind Alattes in Sardis, Lydia (present-day Turkey), c. 610-600 BC. These coins are worth in the $1,500 to $3,500 range (NZD), although, it is not especially rare, it's just in significant demand because of its history. The first people who used Lydian Lion was obviously the Lydians. The invention of the coins is still a mystery.

The advantages of the money were that its light. According to Sardisexpedition, Lydian Lions weight the most of 4.7g and the smallest of 0.29g. Which was a good thing for Lydians because they weren't heavy to carry. It was stamped or minted a lion, so it was easy to recognise.

There were some disadvantages that there weren't banks in Lydia, so they couldn't secure the money. It could be stolen.

The lion minted in the coin symboled of royalty. The two deep impressions were created by a hammer.


From Notes to Credit Cards

In 1950, credit cards showed up when Ralph Schneider and Frank McNamara founded Diners Club and issued it's first credit cards. But, it wasn't truly a credit card. Instead, it was a charge card that needed the cardholder to pay the entire balance off each month.

But in 1958, Bank of America issued the first general-purpose credit card. They launched BankAmericard, the paper card considered as the first credit card. Also, it had offered a revolution card, which gave customers the ability to carry in balance. In the same year, the American Express Company issued a travel and entertainment payment card.

In 1970, BankAmericard splits off into National BankAmericard, an interbank that issued and managed credit cards. Then in 1976, National Americard Inc. became Visa.

The advantages of credit cards that there is protection for the consumer (customer). There are quick resources for an emergency. It is safer than cash. It works in any currency.

The disadvantages of credit cards that there are credit card frauds. There is a range of fraud schemes that target credit cards. If you carry a balance from month to month, you'll pay interest charges.

Did you know that the first use of credit cards started in the United States in the 1920s, when individual firms, like oil companies and hotel chains, began issuing them to customers for purchases made at company outlets?

Contactless Payment or 'payWave', in New Zealand, is a system that is used by credit, debit cards, smart cards, and mobile/smartphone devices to make payment more secure. Some devices/smartphones support payWave such as Google Pay, Apple Pay, Fitbit Pay, Samsung Pay, Garmin Pay and more. payWave is easy, convenient, secure and widely accepted.

The first contactless payment cards were issued in the UK by Barclaycard in 2007. According to Wikipedia, in December 2014, there were approximately 58 million contactless payment cards in use. Now, contactless payment cards are used all around the world. 

There are advantages in payWaves, such as fraud. 'Financial Fraud Action UK' says fraud on contactless cards and devices "remain low" with £2.8 million ($5.6 million, NZD) losses in 2015. payWave is easy, convenient, secure and widely accepted.

There are some disadvantages in payWaves like transaction limit. With a contactless card, you cannot change the limit per transaction chosen by your bank. If your device/smartphones battery is low, then there might be trouble paying.

Many companies support contactless cards which is good for the customers.

SEXXXY Paragraphs | English

Welcome to another post on my blog. In today's post, I am going to share my task that I'd finished in English. As you know, I'm doing a film study in English of Wonder. I have to write two SEXXXY Paragraphs and post it on my blog. First, we had to choose two screenshots to write two SEXXXY paragraph on.

Our learning outcome was to construct a written response to a visual text.
Success Criteria: I can

• Construct a paragraph using the SEXXXY structure. 
• Explain how aspects and film techniques are used in a visual text. 
• Use examples from the text to support my thinking.

In this scene, long shots, medium shots, over the shoulder and low angle shots are used appropriately. We can see this when the director used a long shot when Auggie accepted Amos and their friends as his friend. We see this when the director used over the shoulder when Amos and Auggie are talking to the others. This makes the audience feel shocked, confused and surprised because up till this point Amos and his friends used to agree and stay friends with Julian. This was done to show the theme of the importance of friendship and family, because, Amos and his friends be friends with Auggie. This worked well with long shots to show the emotions of all of the characters surviving from the seventh graders. This reminds the viewer of a moment later in the film when it was graduation day and Auggie was named in the service award. All students in Auggie's class supported him when his name was announced. After that incident in the woods, Auggie had been accepted in class.

In this scene, long shots are used adequately. We can see this when the director used a long shot when Auggie and Jack Will were playing with the lightsaber. This makes the audience feel happy and joyful. Because up till this point Jack hadn't played and been at Auggie's house. The director did this to show that Auggie and Jack Will are good friends. Coinciding with the shot was euphoric music in loud key, making the scene even happier. This technique can be juxtaposed with Summer deciding to sit with Auggie instead of the popular girls who were talking behind Auggie's back.

Do you know how to play Softball?

Welcome to another post on my blog. In today's post, I am going to share the rules and steps to play softball. But, we played softball without a tee.

Did you know that softball is a different version of the sport baseball? It is because, in baseball, players throw the ball overarm, and in softball, players throw underarm. Softball is played with a larger ball than baseball. Softballs are dense and softer than baseballs. Softballs come in different colours, white mostly and neon for clearer visibility, (mostly at night). Softball grounds are smaller than baseball grounds because softballs don't travel that far than baseballs. Softball games last for seven innings whilst baseball lasts for nine innings typical for higher-level baseball games.

Here are the basic rules to play softball.

Two teams of nine players take turns at batting and fielding. The aim of the batting team is to get the most points. It is by hitting the ball and running around all bases to the home base to score a point. The fielding team tries to defend its bases by getting three outs and not allowing the batting team to score. The team with the most points wins. A tiebreaker comes to play if the scores are tied.

Here is what you need to play softball - equipment

You need;

• Softball bat
• Softball

• Four Bases

There are four bases (first base, second base, third base and the home base) on the field. Inside the diamond is the infield which the pitcher throws the ball underarm; outside the baselines is the outfield. 

There are a few ways a batter or runner can be out in the following;

• If the batter hits the ball and one of the fielders (including the pitcher) catches the ball on the full before hitting the ground. 
• The ball is thrown to a fielder at a base before a runner reaches there. 
• Each miss by the batter is called a strike, if there are three strikes in a row, then the batter is out.

What happened today was that our class was split into two teams of nine. Our team were fielding first. I was standing at the third base trying to get the batter out. After the batter team got four runs, I moved to the first base after the home base, trying to get an opportunity to get a batter out. The batter hit the ball it passed the pitcher, I ran to get the ball and went back to the base. The batter was short and I got the batter out. It was three outs, so we had to switch, our team were going to bat, trying to beat the opposition's score, four. I was the fourth batter to bat in the team. The first two batters had run to score two points for the team. The third batter was in the second base and I am in the home base playing my first ball. The first ball was a miss, so that was a strike. I wanted to hit the second ball and I did because there was no fielder in the first base (which was weird) I ran straight to the first base and I was safe. It was up to the other batters to hit the ball. The next batter hit the ball and I went straight to the second base, I was again safe. The next batter had hit the ball, I went past the third base and went to the home base, that was one more run. We had won the game.

What's Money | Business Studies

Welcome to another post on my blog. In today's post, I am going to share you my mindmup explaining what money is, its uses and how it's worked. After learning about enterprising and entrepreneurs we moved on to money and values. I made this mindmup with a buddy, we researched facts about money and wrote it down in our own words in the mindmup. What I've learnt about money is that the first country to make money was Lydia, it appeared in the 7th century BC, Lydia was located in the western part now known as Turkey.

The general feeling of the scene. How we feel watching the scene.

Warm - makes feel comfortable, safe, welcoming.

Cold - feels sterile, clean, futuristic, technological

Bright - feels more lively, energised, vibrant

Dull - feels calm, quiet, boring, old

Natural light - sources are sun/moon, feels like real life

Artificial light - man-made sources, feel unnatural

Palette - the colours used in that shot eg. Nature palette will have colours found in nature like brown/greens.

Co-Construct our SEXXXY paragraph:

In the scene where Auggie cries to his mother about being bullied, colour and lighting is used to create an atmosphere of sympathy. We see this through the use of warm and dull colour in the shot. These make the space feel safe & comfortable for Auggie to express his emotions. This makes us understand how Auggie is feeling; miserable, oppressed because he looks different from his pairs. He asks his mum, " will it always matter" which is a feeling most in the audience can relate. This was done to show the theme, the importance of friendship and family, because Auggie learns resilience by talking issues through his him. Combined with this is the use of close up shots to show the emotions and tears on Auggie's face. This reminds the viewer of a moment later in the story where Auggie is upset because his sister Via doesn't want him to go to her play. Just like this scene, Auggie runs to his room upset and a member of his family comes to reassures him.

Kiwi Ingenuity | Business Studies

In today's business studies lesson, we were looking more at Kiwi Ingenuity. We had to answer the question, 'How does Kiwi ingenuity benefit New Zealand as a nation?' Now, this is my answer to this question.

Kiwi ingenuity helps us Kiwis or New Zealanders a lot. Also, there are several things which New Zealand is famous because of its ingenuity, like the bungy jumping, zorbing and also the referee whistle.

AJ Hackett invented the extreme activity of bungy jumping or bungee jumping. This activity had attracted thousands of people around the world because they want to experience the bungy and other more reasons.

Another famous activity that was invented by New Zealander entrepreneur was zorbing. It is all thanks to two kiwi blokes, Andrew Akers and Dwane van der Sluis who invented ZORB in Rotorua in 1994. ZORB is a giant ball that spins hills up to 50kph.

The next invention is the referee whistle. New Zealand referee William Atack became the first sports referee in the world to use a whistle to stop a game in 1884. Before William's invention, referees had to raise their voice to control games. According to historian Arthur Swan, official historian for the New Zealand Rugby Football Union; "When both sides were appealing, the voice had to be exercised loudly and Atack found it exhausting. Thinking it over one day while refereeing a rugby game, his fingers strayed into a waistcoat pocket where they encountered a dog whistle. It was a great success and was adopted all over the country."

Workshop 2: The Impact of Angles, Movement & Shots | English

Welcome to another post on my blog. In today's post, I am sharing you my next workshop for English. I hope you like it.

Brainstorm:

Shot 1: Jack & Julian are fighting because Jack had chosen to stand up to Julien after he called Auggie a freak.

Shots/Angles:

• Dutch Tilt - something is wrong in the scene
• Low Angle - makes person on top look stronger - Jack & person below look weak & vulnerable - Julian

Viewers reaction

→ Concerned, worried, surprised

→ Jack had never stood up for Auggie before

→ Jack usually agrees with Julian.

Directors Purpose

→ Close-up used to make us feel part of the fight, see the characters emotions & reactions.
→ Uses techniques to build our concern/shock.

Other techniques

→ Slow-motion - used to show us the details in the fight - too fast otherwise.
→ Music - minor, slow tempo, dynamics increases from quite to help us focus & create atmosphere.




Co-Construct our SEXXXY paragraph:

S - In the fight scene between Julian and Jack, camera angles are used effectively to draw the viewer into the scene.

E - This is demonstrated through the use of low angles, close-ups and dutch tilt shots. The low angle shot makes Jack look stronger and more aggressive, whilst Julian looks weak & vulnerable below him.

X -  This makes the audience feel concerned, shocked and surprised because up till this point Jack had always agreed with Julian.

X - The director did this to draw the viewer into the event and highlight Jack's struggle to choose between being right or being popular.

X -  Combined with this is the use of slow-motion and music which help us to see details on the characters faces and recognise their emotional reactions.

Y -  This can be compared to the use of close-up shots at the start of the film when we first meet Auggie. They are both used to show us a small part of a bigger moment.

Kindness

Definition - A verbal or physical action that is nice. Caring. Using manners. Respect.

Example 1

• When Jack sticks up for Auggie during the fight scene with Julian.
• Shows Kindness - Sticking up for a friend
• Not letting others talk badly about friends.
• Jack has previously not been kind, talked about Auggie behind his back.
• Important because
• helps people make friends
• makes people feel accepted/included
• if there wasn't kindness Auggie wouldn't have made any friends, grown his self-confidence to be able to take off his helmet, feel included at Beeker Prep.

When Amos & the others help Jack & Auggie fight the 7th Graders. 

Importance of Friendship & Family

Definition - People who you can trust, the trust of others, support systems, people you feel safe with, help build resilience.

When the Pullman's dog dies.

• Auggie & Via put aside their argument to look after each other.

Fight at the Nature Reserve where Auggie and the other boys come together to rescue Jack & Auggie from the 7th Graders.

• Support, because they stand up for each other
• Trust, the boys come to help them, they don't abandon each other
• Resilence, the boys support each other to move forward, they are all friends now.

Important to the Story

• Good relationships with friends help Auggie build trust & feel safe. He takes the helmet off.
• His friendship with Summer teaches him resilience, trust & forgiveness.
• His family are always there to support him when things go wrong at school.

Struggle between being right and being popular

Definition - Being right means showing integrity - doing the right thing even no one is watching. Being popular means agreeing with/acting in a way others want you to, even when you don't agree.

Example 1

When Jack chose to stay with Auggie as his science partner instead of Julian.

• Jack chose right over popular. Julian wanted to leave Auggie out & Jack chose not to.
• In the past, Jack had picked friendship with Julian over Auggie.

Example 2

When Summer decides to sit with Auggie instead of the popular girls who were talking behind Auggie's back.

• Summer chose right - not to sit and talk nasty with her friends, but to go and sit with Auggie who was alone.
• Auggie doesn't trust her first because of Jack.
• Summer stays anyway & helps Auggie - link to the importance of friendships.

Important to the Story

• The concept is relatable, everyone has to experience this, so it helps the viewer to engage with the story.
• Makes kindness/relationships more obvious when we've seen the persons struggle

Teamwork Reflection | Health

Welcome to another post on my blog. In today's post, I am going to share you my reflection from the last lesson on health. For the past few lessons in health, we have been planning the teamwork activity that we had to run for the class. We were given a video to watch and we had to choose one team activity to run for the class.

We had to answer some questions for the reflection;

What went well/good in the previous lesson?

Everyone contributed to the activities by each group. There were no problems, everyone had fun. Things went out smoothly.

What did not go well in the previous lesson?

The weather was quite windy, so we had to do all of the activities inside the class.

How did you display kindness? Confidence? Goals?

I displayed kindness by listening to the groups explaining and demonstrating the activities. I had a bit confidence explaining the activity. My goal was to get the water balloon the furthest with my partner catching it.

Innovative Ideas | Business Studies

Welcome to another post on my blog. In today's post, I am going to share the innovative idea that our group had created. We had to come up with an idea which could be improved. We had to create this blog post explaining ways to improve it and how. We had given some questions to answer.

What are we trying to improve?

We are trying to improve the juice sprayer, or known as the Lemon Juice Sprayer, which sprays the juice from the lemon, it benefits in different ways.


Why do you want to improve it?

Our group found out that the juice sprayer could be found in two sizes, small, for small fruits, and a big size for big fruits like lemons and oranges. We want to change the product slightly better.


What could be the changes allow for?

Our group thought to make the sizes for the sprayer detachable, so you can take off the small size to a bigger one. In the original product, you have to buy two sprayers for two sizes. We want to make it that our product comes with the big and small size. We have made our own name too, Instant Jewce Sprayer.

Theme Guide - Wonder | English

Welcome to another post on my blog. In today's post, I am going to share my theme guide for English. Last week, we watched a movie named 'Wonder'. We then watched it again and analyse it. After analysing the movie, we had to complete an activity from four activities.

It was about themes and ideas from the movie. I had chosen the 'Theme Guide', as seen from the title. I had to explain how each theme is shown in the film and give them times to stop and look, quotes and key moments to watch for. We had to present it creatively.

Special Effects:

Slow-motion of Auggie jumping because it makes more realistic as, in space, there is no gravity in space so people move slower.

Diagetic - ground control talking over radio, gives us the idea we are in space.

Music tempo starts slow with quiet dynamic to match the slow-mo of outer space. Tempo picks up when we zoom out to see Auggie in his room.

Chewbacca → 32:40 → Shows us Auggie, understands why people, but how he wishes they'd deal with it.

Everyone in the Star Wars universe looks strange, weird & deformed so no one treats them differently. This would be a safe place for Auggie because no one would stare.

High Angle Shot - down onto the bully, makes him look weak & vulnerable while Auggie, Jack, Amos & the others look strong.

Used to build tension or suspense.

Tempo - very quick rhythm

Dynamics - starts quiet but gets louder as boys start running - builds anxiety

Chords - minor - looked at with tempo makes it feel anxious.

We are shown a similar scene to the opening, only this time the background is actual space rather than a painting on Auggies bedroom wall.

Finishes with a repeat of the astronaut jump arms up into the shot.

Music:

Major key - happy

Tempo - fast - gives energy

Dynamics - loud - gives energy

It makes the viewer feel happy about the ending!


Whereas the start Auggie was imagining himself as happy, at the end he actually is happy which is why the background of the scene is now realistic.

Welcome to another post on my blog. Last lesson in Business Studies, we looked at examples of Kiwi Ingenuity. We looked from Scootboards to Van Boats. We had to answer some questions related to the evaluation ideas.


Which one of these examples of Kiwi Ingenuity do you think would be the most benefit to New Zealanders?

I think the clothing and equipment would be the most benefit to New Zealanders because companies like Katmandu and Icebreaker provide good equipment for us to use. They also last for a long time.

Which one of these examples of Kiwi Ingenuity do you think would be the least benefit to New Zealanders? 

I think the Scootboard would be the last benefit to New Zealanders because they don't work at all. It is quite hard to steer and it's quite weird.

1. Mountain Buggy

Compared to prams, the Mountain Buggy has lots of grip in their tyers. Also, it is also available with duets. It has really good material, which comforts the babies.

2. Waterfall Slide

The waterfall slide, located in Arthur's Pass protects us from rockfall and landslides. It also takes water from the mountain to the river.
