Summer Learning Journey 2019-20 | Week 4, Day 5 | Activity 3: Concluding the Journey

Welcome to another post on my blog. This is the fourth week and the last day for the Summer Learning Journey 2019-20. If you don't know, the Summer Learning Journey is a holiday programme where we do blog posts over the summer holidays. This is because we don't drop down in our reading and writing. Because over the holidays, we have so much fun and not do any reading or writing, so we drop down in our scores.

The second week of this Summer Learning Journey is about All The World's A Stage - Arts and Entertainment.

Activity 3: Concluding the Journey [6 points]

Sadly, the Summer Learning Journey has now come to an end. It is time to reflect on everything that you have learned this summer about people who have had an impact, or changed the world, in some way.

For this activity, please reflect on your experience with the Summer Learning Journey programme this year.

On your blog please tell us:

  1. Which activity you enjoyed the most
  2. Which activity you enjoyed the least
  3. Three things that you learned while completing the programme
  4. What changes/improvements you would make to the programme for next year

I hope you enjoyed reading my posts during the summer holidays and liked my post. Have a cool day!! Bye!!

Summer Learning Journey 2019-20 | Week 3, Day 2 | Activity 1: Through Careful Observation

Welcome to another post on my blog. This is the third week for the Summer Learning Journey 2019-20. If you don't know, the Summer Learning Journey is a holiday programme where we do blog posts over the summer holidays. This is because we don't drop down in our reading and writing. Because over the holidays, we have so much fun and not do any reading or writing, so we drop down in our scores.

The second week of this Summer Learning Journey is about Experiments & Gadgets: Science, Technology and Invention.

DAY 2: CRACKING THE CODE

Activity 1: Through Careful Observation [4 points]

There are many incredible people in history who have changed the world. Some have changed what we know about the world and about how it works. We often call these people ‘scientists’ or ‘theorists.’ Famous scientists include Sir Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Katherine Freese, Maria Goeppert Mayer and Sau Lan Wu.

Each of these scientists came up with a new theory (idea) about how things work. Much of what they discovered came from observing (watching) things closely.

For this activity, we would like you to select one of the pictures below and to study or observe it closely. What do you see?

The Starry Night
Image Attribution: The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh is in the Public Domain.

Day and Night
Image Attribution: Day and Night, 1938, by MC Escher. Images courtesy of Collection Gemeentemuseum Den Haag/the MC Escher Company.

I have chosen the Day and Night image.

I could see two world dividing and move away from each other. It shows that one side is brightness and the other is darkness (Day and Night). I really like this image because it makes people look and observe the image closely.

Summer Learning Journey 2019-20 | Week 4, Day 1 | Activity 3: The Diary of Anne Frank

Welcome to another post on my blog. This is the fourth week for the Summer Learning Journey 2019-20.

Activity 3: The Diary of Anne Frank [6 points]

Anne Frank was a very brave girl. She was born and raised in a Jewish family in Germany in the 1930s. When World War II started, Anne and her family were forced to hide because the German politicians (Nazis) did not like Jewish people. She and her family hid out in a secret room in their house for two full years. During this time, Anne wrote in a diary. When the war ended, Anne’s dad found the diary and made it into a book. He called it The Diary of Anne Frank or The Diary of a Young Girl.

I know lots of people who keep a diary. Often they will record what they did during the day or recount stories about special events that have taken place.

For this activity, we would like you to imagine that you have a diary. In your diary please write a story about your most extraordinary day. What happened? You can tell us about an actual event or you can make one up. It’s totally up to you! Please be as creative as you can.

Summer Learning Journey 2019-20 | Week 2, Day 1 | Activity 3: 'Dear Jacinda'

Welcome to another post on my blog. This is the second week for the Summer Learning Journey 2019-20. If you don't know, the Summer Learning Journey is a holiday programme where we do blog posts over the summer holidays. This is because we don't drop down in our reading and writing. Because over the holidays, we have so much fun and not do any reading or writing, so we drop down in our scores.

The second week of this Summer Learning Journey is about I have a dream... - Politics and Activism.

Activity 3: ‘Dear Jacinda’ [6 points]

The Right Honorable Jacinda Ardern is the current Prime Minister (PM) of New Zealand (NZ). You might have heard of her because she’s in the news a lot! Did you know that she is the second youngest person and the second woman ever to be elected PM of NZ?

As PM, Jacinda Ardern makes a number of important decisions every day. Before she makes these decisions, she meets with many people to hear their ideas and get their perspectives (views) on issues.

Let’s imagine you were to write a letter to Jacinda Ardern about an issue that is really important to you, and to ask her for help. It could be something serious to do with education, health or welfare, or it could be something more fun and crazy - you decide!

For this activity, please write a letter that includes the issue you have chosen, why you have chosen it, and what you would like our Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, to do about it. It is your job to persuade us (and her!) that it’s an important issue.

On your blog, share your letter to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

Dear Prime Minister,

Thank you for being a good leader for New Zealand and helping others. There have been some changes in New Zealand which is good.

Climate Change is one of the biggest issues on Earth which everyone is talking about. Climate Change is a serious issue which affects our planet and our future. Climate Change is also affecting and melting the North and South Poles, which is causing Sea Level rise.

New Zealand is generating lots of energy by using renewable energy like hydroelectric dams, solar panels, wave energy and wind turbines. But, I think that we still need to continue to increase the renewable energy because we are still using gas, coal, wood, geothermal and more.

Using renewable energy is much better for us and the planet because we are not using fossil fuels. Even a small thing like using petrol is dealing with Global Warming. We should walk or ride our bikes.

These actions will have a big effect on Climate Change. If this doesn't happen, then the temperatures will rise and the situations might happen to the weather in Australia.

I really like the development which is happening in New Zealand. But I think that there should be more trees in the cities.

Thank you for reading.

Yours Sincerely

Khush

Summer Learning Journey 2019-20 | Week 2, Day 5 | Activity 1: Everyday Heroes

Welcome to another post on my blog. This is the second week for the Summer Learning Journey 2019-20. If you don't know, the Summer Learning Journey is a holiday programme where we do blog posts over the summer holidays. This is because we don't drop down in our reading and writing. Because over the holidays, we have so much fun and not do any reading or writing, so we drop down in our scores.

The second week of this Summer Learning Journey is about I have a dream... - Politics and Activism.

DAY 5: HUMANITARIAN HEROES

Activity 1: Everyday Heroes [4 points]

Every day, the men and women in the Emergency Services provide help and support people in New Zealand and around the world. At times, they have to risk their lives in order to save others.

Common Emergency Services include the Fire Service, the Police Force and the Ambulance Service. Other related services include the Air Ambulance, Search and Rescue, Coast Guard, Surf Lifesaving, and the Civil Defence (amongst others).

In Australia, Fire Services are currently fighting more than 150 wildfires burning in New South Wales, a province on the east coast of the country. The wildfires started in November 2019 and are not expected to stop for many weeks. It is a very challenging time for the men and women serving in the Emergency Services in Australia.

For this activity, please brainstorm at least five ways we could support the people who are affected by the fires in New South Wales, Australia. You could think of ways to raise money, things to send them, and ways to keep them feeling positive.

On your blog, share your brainstorm of ideas and create a video or audio recording of yourself explaining each idea.

Summer Learning Journey 2019-20 | Week 4, Day 2 | Activity 3: Girl Power

Welcome to another post on my blog. This is the fourth week for the Summer Learning Journey 2019-20.

Activity 3: Girl Power [6 points]

Jessica Mauboy is an Aboriginal Australian singer. She rose to fame when she was runner-up in the 2006 Australian Idol, and has gone on to record a number of very successful songs. She is a role model for both girls, and indigenous Australians as she has been so successful in her music and acting career.

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa is an opera singer from Aotearoa/New Zealand. She became one of the best sopranos (a female singer with a high voice) in the world. Dame Kiri Te Kanawa is Māori, however she was adopted when she was a baby and very little is known about her birth family.

For young singers, both of these women can serve as role models - people who have faced challenges and overcome them in order to achieve their dreams of becoming professional singers.

For this activity, we would like to choose one role model and tell us about them. What makes them a role model? They can be people you know personally, people you have seen on television or the internet, people you have heard on the radio or people you have heard about from a friend of family member. You do not have to know them personally.

On your blog, tell us about your chosen role model. Please be sure to tell us why you think they are a role model.

I hope you learnt something new and liked my post. Have a cool day!! Bye!!

Summer Learning Journey 2019-20 | Week 4, Day 2 | Activity 1: Getting Stronger

Welcome to another post on my blog. This is the fourth week for the Summer Learning Journey 2019-20.

DAY 2: MUSOS

Activity 1: Getting Stronger [4 points]

Aaradhna is a Samoan-Indian singer from New Zealand. As a girl, Aaradhna sang traditional Samoan and country songs with her family, eventually joining the senior choir at her high school (Porirua College). She gained international recognition in 2004 when she paired up with Adeaze to release the song, “Getting Stronger.” The song went to number one on the New Zealand Singles Chart.

Speaking of favourite songs, we would love to know who you listen to and what songs you like the most.

For this activity, please give us a list of your ‘Top 5’ favourite artists (singers or bands) and your ‘Top 5’ favourite songs. They can be from any time period and any genre (type) of music.

Saying the truth, I really don't have my favourite songs, because I don't even listen to them at all.

Summer Learning Journey 2019-20 | Week 4, Day 5 | Activity 1: The World of Hip Hop

Welcome to another post on my blog. This is the fourth week for the Summer Learning Journey 2019-20. If you don't know, the Summer Learning Journey is a holiday programme where we do blog posts over the summer holidays. This is because we don't drop down in our reading and writing. Because over the holidays, we have so much fun and not do any reading or writing, so we drop down in our scores.

DAY 5: DANCING QUEENS

Activity 1: The World of Hip Hop [4 points]

Parris Goebel has taken over the world of dance! You might already have heard of her as she is pretty famous in New Zealand and around the world.

Parris was born in Manurewa, South Auckland, and she is of Samoan/Chinese/Scottish descent. Parris loved dancing when she was very little and she began hip-hop lessons when she was 10. By the age of 15 she was so good that she started her own all-girl dance crew called ReQuest, and they went on to win several first places at the World Hip-Hop Championships.

Parris later started The Palace Dance Studio in Auckland, and formed five more dance crews that won competitions worldwide. She has also worked as a choreographer for famous musicians like Justin Beiber, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, and Janet Jackson. In 2019, Parris and her new dance crew, The Royal Family, won the World Hip Hop Dance Championship.

For this activity, watch this video of their award winning performance. What do you like about the performance? What did the dance crew do well? What could they work on?

They had done an amazing job. Their song had lots of beat and people were cheering them on. There was so much noise from the crowd. Their outfits were really attractive, because of its light neon colour. It was amazing that their choreography was perfect and planned out. It was very unique.

Summer Learning Journey 2019-20 | Week 3, Day 3 | Activity 3: Need for Speed

Welcome to another post on my blog. This is the third week for the Summer Learning Journey 2019-20. If you don't know, the Summer Learning Journey is a holiday programme where we do blog posts over the summer holidays. This is because we don't drop down in our reading and writing. Because over the holidays, we have so much fun and not do any reading or writing, so we drop down in our scores.

The second week of this Summer Learning Journey is about Experiments & Gadgets: Science, Technology and Invention.

Activity 3: Need for Speed [6 points]

We have had many inventors here in New Zealand who have created things that have changed the world. Two of these inventors were Bill Hamilton (1899-1978) and John Britten (1950-1995).

Bill Hamilton grew up on a farm in the South Island of New Zealand. One of his first inventions was a tow rope to pull skiers up a ski field. His most famous invention, however, is the development of the modern jet boat engine. It allows boats, like the Huka Falls Jet, to travel at lightning speed along rivers. Bill Hamilton invented the jet boat to solve a problem.

John Britten, on the other hand, loved to rebuild vehicles, including motorbikes. He set up the Britten Motorcycle Company from his garage in Christchurch, New Zealand. One of his bikes, the V1000, won a number of international races and set a world speed record for going 304km per hour! Wow! Now that is fast…!

Speaking of fast, for this activity we would like you to design your own fast vehicle. It can be anything! Please draw your super-fast vehicle on paper or use an app to help you.

Summer Learning Journey 2019-20 | Week 4, Day 2 | Activity 2: K-pop heroes

Welcome to another post on my blog. This is the fourth week for the Summer Learning Journey 2019-20. If you don't know, the Summer Learning Journey is a holiday programme where we do blog posts over the summer holidays. This is because we don't drop down in our reading and writing. Because over the holidays, we have so much fun and not do any reading or writing, so we drop down in our scores.

The second week of this Summer Learning Journey is about All The World's A Stage - Arts and Entertainment.

Activity 2: K-pop heroes [4 points]

BTS, or Bangtan Boys, is a seven member boy band from South Korea. They have sold over 15 million albums in South Korea, which make them the best selling artists in South Korea of all time. They have topped the music charts in the United States of America and around the world.

They began singing hip hop but now sing mostly K-Pop (Korean Pop). Most of their songs are sung in Korean - their first language.

BTS is famous for making great music videos and for singing about topics that many people can relate to - love, self-confidence, etc. They have a huge and very loyal fan base. Their fans are called the BTS A.R.M.Y.

For this activity, please watch this CBS Sunday Morning Special about BTS.

On your blog, tell us your opinion on BTS. Please don’t just say whether or not you like them, but tell us what it is that you like (or don’t like) about them.

It is amazing that BTS is being popular all around the world and grown so much in a short amount of time. Also, it is shocking that they are the first Korean act to sell out a U.S. stadium, the first K-Pop group to present at the Grammy Awards and the first Korean pop band to be featured on Time Magazine's Most Influential List. At a young age, they have been popular all around the world and are one of the most popular brands in the world. There is nothing which I don't like about them.

Summer Learning Journey 2019-20 | Week 4, Day 5 | Activity 2: En Pointe

Welcome to another post on my blog. This is the fourth week for the Summer Learning Journey 2019-20. If you don't know, the Summer Learning Journey is a holiday programme where we do blog posts over the summer holidays. This is because we don't drop down in our reading and writing. Because over the holidays, we have so much fun and not do any reading or writing, so we drop down in our scores.

The second week of this Summer Learning Journey is about All The World's A Stage - Arts and Entertainment.

Activity 2: En Pointe [4 points]

Most successful ballerinas start learning ballet when they are very young - 3 or 4 years old. World famous ballerina, Misty Copeland, wasn’t like most other girls. Instead of starting at age 3, she started ballet lessons at age 13!

By 14, Misty had won a national competition for ballet dancers. She continued to work very hard and, in 2015, she became the first African Amercian principal (lead) dancer of the Amercian Ballet Theatre - this is amazing because there were, and still are, very few African American ballet dancers in the country. When interviewed, Misty has said that she would like people to be able to “see dreams through me”. This is an example of an inspirational quote. Please click on this link to read more inspirational quotes.

For this activity, please choose your favourite inspirational quote from this website. Create a text graphic using this quote.

On your blog, share your text graphic and underneath it, explain what it means to you.

This quote is really meant to me because my dream job is a really big dream and a big thing. I really need to work hard to achieve this big dream.

I hope you learnt something new and liked my post. Have a cool day!! Bye!!

Summer Learning Journey 2019-20 | Week 4, Day 1 | Activity 3: Feast or Famine

Welcome to another post on my blog. This is the fourth week for the Summer Learning Journey 2019-20. If you don't know, the Summer Learning Journey is a holiday programme where we do blog posts over the summer holidays. This is because we don't drop down in our reading and writing. Because over the holidays, we have so much fun and not do any reading or writing, so we drop down in our scores.

The second week of this Summer Learning Journey is about All The World's A Stage - Arts and Entertainment.

Activity 3: Feast or Famine [6 points]

Julian Dennison is a very funny guy! He is from Lower Hutt, near Wellington. He is only 17 years old but he has already starred in a number of movies and TV commercials. You may have seen him on Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Deadpool, or in the Lynx ads.

Julian is not only a funny actor. He recently joined up with World Vision to be a 40 Hour Famine Ambassador. He travelled with World Vision to Uganda to meet some of the refugees from South Sudan who are living there. Check out this video.

For this activity, we would like to know if you would consider doing a 20 or 40 Hour Famine to raise money for charity.

On your blog, tell us whether, or not, you would participate in 20 or 40 Hour Famine. If you have already participated in a 20 or 40 Hour Famine, please share your experience, including why you decided to participate and some highlights and challenges of the experience. To get full points, please provide at least six sentences.

If I want to do it, I would go for the 20 Hour Famine for giving up technology. It is really good for controlling ourselves to give up technology for 20 hours. I think that 40 hours will be too hard for me, so 20 hours is better.

I hope you learnt something new and liked my post. Have a cool day!! Bye!!

Blue Glow Glowworms | Trip to Queenstown - Day 2

Shortly, I posted about the first day of my trip to Queenstown. We are going to stay for a few days and go back to Christchurch. I am going to share you my story for day 2.

Day 2 - Friday, 10 Jan

WANAKA
8:07 am

We left Wanaka at 8:07 am and headed straightaway to Te Anau. We thought to stop at Jones Family Fruit Stall in Cromwell.

CROMWELL
9:26 am

After driving for 1 hour and 18 minutes, we arrived in Cromwell. This fruit stall sells various fresh and delicious fruits to eat. They also had a tester to test the fruits. They were mostly dry fruits. I had tried the dry Apricots and Mangoes. I really liked the dry Apricots because of its wonderful taste. We had stayed for 19 minutes choosing fruits to eat. At 9:45 am, we left the fruit stall and headed over to our next stop.

FRANKTON, QUEENSTOWN
11:40 am

It took 2 hours and 11 minutes to arrive in the Five Mile Shopping Centre in Frankton, near Queenstown. I saw that there was a EB Games store nearby. I went there to check if I would buy any games. We stayed there for a few minutes and left the store. After taking a rest in Frankton, we went straight to our next place.

KINGSTON
12:26 pm

We arrived at the Devil's Staircase Lookout Point, where we could see a wonderful view of Lake Wakatipu and the mountains behind it. We didn't stayed there for a long time (10 minutes) because we had to get moving on.

GARSTON
1:14 pm

We stopped at the Honey shop in Garston named the Hunny Shop. It sells wonderful honey. We also had to taste different types of honey (Manuka Honey, Multi Floral, Wild Thyme, Premium Clover, and more honey products). We bought some honey to eat at home.

TE ANAU
2:56 pm

1 hour and 16 minutes later, we arrived to our motel, Parklands Motel. We had put our luggage and rested for a while because we are going to see the Glowworms from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. At 3:53 pm we set to the Real Journeys Visitor Centre, where the cruise is arriving. But we thought that it was too early, so we walked to order food in a restaurant. As we were walking to the restaurant, we went to a souvenir shop. We stayed there for a few minutes and left to go to the restaurant, which took 7 minutes.

After ordering the food, we went back to the Real Journeys Visitor Centre (4:37 pm) and waited for the cruise to arrive. This cruise will take to an island where we will see the glowworms. Sadly, we weren't allowed to take photos or videos inside the cave.

It was a 30 minute catamaran cruise across Lake Te Anau. The journey includes an exploration of a cave system only known by legends until rediscovery in 1948 by ---. This scenic experience was for 2 hours and 15 minutes (1 hour in the boat - return). There was an expert nature guide which lead us by path through the network of limestone passages within the 12,000-year-old cave system to meet the famous twinkling glowworms. It was an enlightening experience. The guide had warned us that in the entrance of the cave, we need to bend down because of low rocks.

After we went off the cruise, the guide tours us into groups of 10-12. I knew that there were lots of Sandflies, so I put on some Insect Repellent. After an introduction by the guide, we went inside the cave. He had told us that only have to bend down when we enter the cave. As we went inside the cave, there were low rocks. I had to bend down so much because I was so tall. Already, we could see lots of glowworms glow. The guide had told us from the start to be quite inside the cave. The guide told us that its tail makes the glowworms glow, which was interesting.

As we got moving on, we got to see more and more glowworms. There was water dripping from the top, which was cool. I could hear water falling from the waterfall which was awesome. It was also good that the path lead us to the top of the waterfall, it was high but the view was magnificent. We went on the guide stopped us, it was because we were waiting for the boat to arrive to see more glowworms.

After a few minutes, the boat had arrived, I sat at the front near the guide. The guide had turned off the lights, so we couldn't see anything except the shimmering glowworms which looked like stars. I went to another glowworm cave in Waitomo, near Hamilton, which was good, but this cave looked better than the one in Waitomo.

As the boat went slower and stopped, we could see glowworms everywhere, in front of us, behind us and on top of us. The boat slowly u-turned and went back to where we were. I observed that I didn't see any sandflies inside the cave.

When we got off the boat, we headed outside and went to see a presentation from the guides in the Cavern House and have some coffee, tea or water.

When I went to the Cavern House, I got some water and sat down to see the presentation. The presentation lasted for 5 minutes and then headed over to the cruise. As we were arriving on the cruise, the cruise had arrived at a fast speed.

After half an hour, we arrived at the shore. It was a really good trip seeing the glowworms. We arrived back at the Real Journeys Visitor Centre at 8:08 pm. We all were feeling hungry and we headed off to the restaurant. When we got the food, we straightaway went to the motel ate dinner.

We finished our food at 8:50 pm because we arrived at 8:30 pm. Half an hour later, we went to sleep because tomorrow we had a long day.

I hope you like my story of day 2 if you want to find out more for the next day, stay tuned to the next post.

Crystal Lakes | Trip to Queenstown - Day 1

Around a week ago, I went on a trip to Queenstown. We are going around New Zealand (not whole, but some). Recently, I had come from Queenstown, and I am going to tell you about my trip to Queenstown. Around two years ago (20 January 2017), I had posted my trip to Queenstown with my Dad's friend. It was really fun. So, this is day 1 of my trip.

Day 1 - Thusday, 9 Jan

CHRISTCHURCH
7:30 am

We woke up on an amazing trip to Queenstown. We got ready and left home at 8:10 am. After driving for 1 hour and 44 minutes, we stopped in Ashburton for Subway. We had some Avocado and Cheese & Garlic toasties. We stayed there for 8 minutes.

We had some small (fresh air) stops to refresh ourselves.

WANAKA
7:09 pm

We had reached Wanaka (final destination) after 9 hours and 8 minutes. Because we were feeling hungry, we ate in Bombay Palace, in-front of the shore. We stayed there more than an hour because it took some time to make the food. We thought after eating, we would go to the lakefront and see the lake, but sadly it was too windy and we couldn't go. It took us 9 minutes to reach our motel, Wanaka Kiwi Holiday Park & Motels.

I hope you like my story of day 1 if you want to find out more for the next day, stay tuned to the next post.

Summer Learning Journey 2019-20 | Week 4, Day 4 | Activity 3: Top Secret Street Art

Activity 3: Top Secret Street Art [6 points]

“Banksy” is an influential artist from England. He is very private and secretive. In fact, almost no one knows who he really is - he always creates his art in secret! Banksy often uses stencils to create his street art.

Street art, or graffiti art, is all around us. Sometimes the art tells a story, sometimes it makes a building look more interesting, and sometimes it makes us think hard about something. In 2011, the city of Christchurch experienced a huge earthquake. A lot of the central city buildings fell down. It takes a long time to rebuild a city, and there are areas of Christchurch where buildings are still damaged and/or need to be rebuilt. Street artists in Christchurch have seen this as a chance to create artwork that helps to make the city beautiful again. You can see lots of amazing street art in Christchurch at the moment! Here is a site that shows you where to find it.

For this activity, take a look at the Christchurch street art website and choose two different pieces of artwork. Look carefully at both pieces of art, and identify similarities and differences between the two.

Summer Learning Journey 2019-20 | Week 4, Day 4 | Activity 1: Fashion forward

Welcome to another post on my blog. This is the fourth week for the Summer Learning Journey 2019-20. If you don't know, the Summer Learning Journey is a holiday programme where we do blog posts over the summer holidays. DAY 4: ARTY DESIGNERS

Activity 1: Fashion forward [4 points]

Coco Chanel was a French fashion designer from the early 1900s. She was very influential because she designed clothes for women that were beautiful, but also comfortable and practical. Before Coco came along, European women wore corsets which pulled in their waists, and dresses that had lots of lace. Coco Chanel introduced a completely new style, influenced by men’s fashion - trousers (pants), monochrome (black and white) fabric, and looser tops.

Twenty Seven Names is a contemporary (current) New Zealand fashion label that is also influential. The founders of the company are two friends, Rachel Easting and Anjali Burnett. Rachel and Anjali met when they were at primary school. When they left school, Anjali studied fashion design and Rachel studied art, before they set up their own business designing and making clothing. Where possible they employ young women and they keep as much of their production (making) in New Zealand as possible.

For this activity, please read this article about where some famous New Zealand brands got their names from. Brand names are very important to companies as this is how they are known.

On your blog, tell us how Twenty Seven Names got their name. Looking at their clothing brand, tell us whether you think this is a good name for them, or if they should change it to something else!

Twenty Seven Names renamed their name from Love Lies Bleeding in 2006 in homage to the 27 people who have supported their business along the way. When I looked at their website, it looked at really different from what the name relates to. It doesn't have a logo which shows what 'Twenty Seven Names' mean. When I tried to search their logo up, it shows up their clothing, which is weird.

I am not sure if they should change their name, I think they should because it doesn't suit the company. I think that they shouldn't because when we changed the name to 'Twenty Seven Names', the company received a lot of public attention, according to designer and co-founder of 'Twenty-Seven Names' Anjali Stewart.

Summer Learning Journey 2019-20 | Week 4, Day 1 | Activity 2: Romeo and Juliet

Welcome to another post on my blog. This is the fourth week for the Summer Learning Journey 2019-20. If you don't know, the Summer Learning Journey is a holiday programme where we do blog posts over the summer holidays. This is because we don't drop down in our reading and writing. Because over the holidays, we have so much fun and not do any reading or writing, so we drop down in our scores.

The second week of this Summer Learning Journey is about All The World's A Stage - Arts and Entertainment.

Activity 2: Romeo and Juliet [4 points]

William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was an author, poet and playwright. He is best known for the plays that he wrote while living in England in the 16th Century. Although they were written a long time ago, they are still popular because they talk about things that are familiar to us - love, revenge, confusion, betrayal, jealousy, hurt, etc. You might have heard of some of his plays: Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, King Lear. Many of them have also been made into movies.

Shakespeare wrote his plays in English, however, it is not the same version of English that we have now. In fact, many of the words that we use today, in 2019, weren’t used back in 1600 (and vice versa).

For this activity, we would like you to learn more about ‘Shakespearean English’ - the version of English that Shakespeare used to write his plays. To do this, please write a short recount about what you did this morning in regular (2019) English, and then use this translating tool to turn it into Shakespearean English.

On your blog, share both your English and Shakespearean translation of your recount.

DAY 3: SCREEN LEGENDS

Activity 1: Talk Show Host [4 points]

Oprah Winfrey is a bit of a television legend! She is best known for her talk show The Oprah Winfrey Show which ran for 25 years. Some people have said that she is one of the most influential women in the world. She is certainly very successful and has spent a lot of time helping others.

Like so many others, Oprah had to work very hard for her success. She had to overcome challenges and she experienced many struggles during her life, however, she persisted and eventually became a radio presenter, TV news presenter, and daytime talk show host. She now owns her own production company (HARPO), and television station (OWN). She also produces a magazine called ‘O.’

Oprah is passionate about education. She believes in the power of learning and has even started her own school in South Africa called The Oprah Winfrey Leadership School for Girls. She is keen to provide young people with opportunities to follow their passions.

For this activity, we would love to know more about your interests (passions) and your future plans. What do you think that you would like to do when you are older? Do you have a specific job in mind?

Summer Learning Journey 2019-20 | Week 2, Day 2 | Activity 3: "I Have a Dream"

Welcome to another post on my blog. This is the second week for the Summer Learning Journey 2019-20. If you don't know, the Summer Learning Journey is a holiday programme where we do blog posts over the summer holidays. This is because we don't drop down in our reading and writing. Because over the holidays, we have so much fun and not do any reading or writing, so we drop down in our scores.

The second week of this Summer Learning Journey is about I have a dream... - Politics and Activism.

Activity 3: “I Have a Dream” [6 points]

Martin Luther King Jr was a Christian minister in the United States of America (USA) in the 1950s and 1960s. He spent much of his life fighting for equality (equal rights) for people of colour. At the time, there were laws that kept black and white people separated - they went to different schools, used different toilets, and even sat in different parts of a bus and ate in different areas of a restaurant. This was called ‘segregation.’

Dr King did not agree with these laws and he led many protests against them. He was joined in his protests by many people, including an African American woman named Rosa Parks. In 1955, Rosa boarded a bus in Alabama (USA) and when the bus filled up with people, she refused to give up her seat to a white passenger.

The brave actions of people like Martin Luther King Jr and Rosa Parks were instrumental in changing the way that African Americans (people of colour) were treated in the United States.

For this activity, please consider the problem that black men and women faced in America at this time.

On your blog, describe the problem. What did Rosa Parks do about the problem? How did other people react?

Summer Learning Journey 2019-20 | Week 3, Day 5 | Activity 3: Choose Your Own

This is because we don't drop down in our reading and writing. Because over the holidays, we have so much fun and not do any reading or writing, so we drop down in our scores.

The second week of this Summer Learning Journey is about Experiments & Gadgets: Science, Technology and Invention.

Activity 3: Choose your own

You have now made it to the end of Week 3 and have earned the right to choose your very own scientist, technologist, or inventor who you think has changed the world. There are no right or wrong choices for this activity, so find someone who interests you and tell us about them on your blog. It could be someone from your family, church or community or someone famous that you admire.

Here are some starting points in case you get stuck:

Summer Learning Journey 2019-20 | Week 3, Day 5 | Activity 2: Caine's Arcade

Welcome to another post on my blog. This is the third week for the Summer Learning Journey 2019-20. If you don't know, the Summer Learning Journey is a holiday programme where we do blog posts over the summer holidays. This is because we don't drop down in our reading and writing. Because over the holidays, we have so much fun and not do any reading or writing, so we drop down in our scores.

The second week of this Summer Learning Journey is about Experiments & Gadgets: Science, Technology and Invention.

Activity 2: Caine’s Arcade [4 points]

Caine Monroy is a 17 year old boy who lives in Los Angeles (L.A.), California. When he was younger, he spent his summer holidays at his dad’s work - an auto parts store in downtown L.A. While his dad was working, he decided to build himself something that he had always wanted - an arcade! He built an arcade all by himself out of cardboard boxes and things that he found lying around the shop.

One day a man came into the store to buy a handle for his car and he met Caine. Caine showed him what he had made and the man was so impressed with the arcade game that he made a movie about Caine and invited all the people in L.A. to come and play the games in Caine’s Arcade!

For this activity we would like to know about your favourite game. It can be a board game, a card game, a game that you play outside with friends (e.g., rugby) or a quiet game that you play by yourself.

On your blog, tell us about your favourite game. What is it called? How do you play it?

One of my favourite sports is Cricket. I play cricket with my friends. Here are some rules to play cricket it is really fun.

You can read the article from wikihow.com, or watch a short video explaining how to play cricket.

To play cricket, first, gather 2 teams of 11 players. You will also need a ball, a cricket bat, and two wickets. Wickets are made of three sticks driven into the ground called “stumps,” topped by two horizontal sticks called “bails.” The goal of the game is to score more points, or runs, than the other team.

Toss a coin to decide which team will bat in the first inning. The first batting team sends 2 batsmen onto the field, one in front of each wicket, while all members of the bowling team spread out. The bowling team throws or bowls the ball at a batsman. The batting team tries to score as many points, called runs, as they can before the inning is over.

To score a run, both batsmen must run past each other to the opposite wicket while a ball is in play. The inning ends when the bowling team finishes their limited number of bowls or gets 10 of the 11 batsmen out.

To get a batsman out, the bowling team can catch the ball before it hits the ground. If the bails behind the batsman are dislodged, the batsman is also out. This can be done by the batsman missing a bowled ball that hits the wicket. It can also happen if the batsman steps too far forward, misses the ball, and is unable to return to the wicket before the opposing team knocks down the bails.

Lastly, the bowling side can hit the stumps with the ball before the running batsmen make it to the opposite wicket. Once a batsman is out, they leave the field and are replaced by another teammate. In the second inning, the bowling team becomes the batting team and tries to outscore the other team.

I hope you learnt something new and liked my post. Have a cool day!! Bye!!

Summer Learning Journey 2019-20 | Week 3, Day 5 | Activity 1: Ministry of Inspiration

Welcome to another post on my blog. DAY 5: CREATIVITY +

Activity 1: Ministry of Inspiration [4 points]

So you might have heard of the Ministry of Education or the Ministry of Health, right? They are groups of people who give advice to the government. But have you heard of the Ministry of Inspiration? It sounds like fun, doesn’t it?! Well, this is a real organisation based in Nelson, New Zealand. Their aim is to get kids thinking creatively in the areas of science, technology, engineering, arts, maths and society (STEAMS).

The Ministry of Inspiration hosts many cool activities and events, including an Aquabot competition. Aquabots are underwater robots. Have you ever heard of them?

For this activity please watch this video about the Pasifika Aquabots competition that was held in Nelson. The students had to navigate their Aquabots around a swimming pool, collecting things and visiting different ‘islands.’

On your blog, tell us whether you would like to join an Underwater Robotics team at your school. Why or why not?

I think that we should have Underwater Robotics in our school because this is a new thing because you have to use your creativity to create a robot which works underwater.
