Summer Leaning Journey 2017 | Week 1 | Day 5

In the beginning (1800 - 1870)
Day 5 - The Dawn of an New Era...

From the 1840s onwards, many European settlers came to live in New Zealand. It was a difficult period in New Zealand’s history. As the settlers began to outnumber the Māori, a great war erupted between the two groups as they fought for access to land to build homes and establish communities.

Activity 1 | Translating Phrases

Unlike the Māori, many of the European settlers didn’t speak Te Reo Māori. Instead, they spoke English. As you can imagine, it was very difficult for the two groups to communicate because they did not have a dictionary or a translator. These days we are able to use the Internet to translate words and phrases from one language to another.

Use Google Translate to translate the following five phrases from English to Te Reo Māori or from Te Reo Māori to English. Post the translations on your blog. Be sure to include the phrase in both the English and Māori to earn full points.

Phrases:
Maori

  1. Nau mai ki Aotearoa.
  2. Ko Khush toku ingoa.
  3. He aha to ingoa?
  4. I like to play rugby.
  5. No hea koe?

English
  1. Welcome to New Zealand.
  2. Khush is my name.
  3. What is your name?
  4. Where do you come from
Activity 2: The Treaty of Waitangi
On 6 February 1840, a very special document was signed by the Māori chiefs and the British settlers in New Zealand. It was called the Treaty of Waitangi (Te Tiriti o Waitangi) and it outlined how the two groups would live together and work together in New Zealand. It was the first document of its kind to be signed in the entire world. The Treaty was signed in a place called Waitangi in northern New Zealand.

Follow this Waitangi village link to read about the village of Waitangi.

On your blog, tell us three fun things that you can do as a visitor in Waitangi. Which one would you like to do the most?

Summer Learning Journey 2017 | Week 1 | Day 4

In the beginning (1800 - 1870)
Day 4 - Hitting a High Note...

Activity 1 | The Waiata - A Song in Your Heart
In the past, Māori would often use song as a way of sharing information or communicating emotions.  A waiata is the name given to a traditional Māori song. One of my all-time favourite waiata is Kia Paimarie. What about you?

Use Google to research traditional Māori Waiata. Listen to a number of Waiata and read the lyrics. On your blog tell us which one of the waiata you found you like the most. Why do you like it?

Waiata: He Honore
This is my favourite because it is the only waiata I have ever heard. Also the lyrics is good.

Activity 2 | Playing Games R20A-2.jpg
Hundreds of years ago, young Māori children were taught to play a number of games, including Poi Rakau, Ki O Rahi, Koruru Taonga and Poi Toa. Read about each of these four games on the Rangatahi tu Rangatira website. Have you played any of them before? Isn’t it cool how the games have been passed down for generations?

Choose one game, and on your blog, tell us the (i) name of the game, (ii) the goal or purpose of the game, and (iii) two rules.
(i) Ki O Rahi
(ii)
(iii) - 1 - There are 7 people allowed in each team. - 2 -  The players have to hold the ball for 3 to 5 seconds or they have to pass or hand over to the other team.
You could try playing some of the games with a friend.

Summer Leaning Journey 2017 | Week 1 | Day 3

In the beginning (1800 - 1870)
Day 3 - It's all in the family

Activity 1 | The More, the merrier?

In the 1800s, most families were pretty big. In fact, many parents had an average of seven to nine children.  Imagine that you were a child in the 1800s and you had nine siblings.

On your blog, please tell us how you would feel. Would you enjoy being a member of such a large family? Why or why not?
I wouldn't have nine siblings in my family because it looks like it is crowded in the house.
Activity 2 | Acknowledging Ancestry

All of us are members of a family. Some of us have large families and some of us have very small families. When I have the opportunity to talk about my family and my ancestry I sometimes choose to use a pepeha. It is a very special way of identifying who I am and where I come from. There are many different versions of pepeha but most provide people with information about who you are and where you come from (i.e. your whakapapa). Use the template provided below to prepare your own unique pepeha. If you need help please watch this short movie clip on preparing a pepeha.
My Pepeha
Ko Port Hills te maunga. The mountain that I affiliate to is…
Ko Avon River te awa. The river that I affiliate to is….
Ko Christchurch, New Zealand ahau. I am from...
Ko Khush tōku ingoa. My name is...

Summer Learning Journey 2017 | Week 1 - Day 2

Today is the second day of the Summer Leaning Journey. Yesterday I posted about the time when the Maori came to New Zealand. If you haven't seen the post click here. I hope you like my post. Hope you comment down below. Have a cool day!! Bye!!

In the beginning (1800 - 1870)
Day 2 - It's all in a day's work
Activity 1: A House or a Home?
In the 1800s, most Māori lived in villages called pa. Each village had many buildings – kauta where people cooked, pataka where they stored goods and wharepuni where the Māori slept. A traditional wharepuni had a thatched roof and walls made of timber, fern, rushes and bark. Look at the picture below of a traditional wharepuni. Does it look like your house?

On your blog, compare the wharepuni to your own home. What are two similarities and two differences between a wharepuni and your house?

Differences
- In the wharepuni the doors are smaller than the modern houses.
- The roof of the wharepuni is made out of hay and flax with a bunch of sticks. But the modern houses roof are made out of tiles and brick.

Similar
-  Both of the houses are suitable to live in.
- Both of them use materials like: Cob, Adobe and Wood.

Activity 2: The Rules of Engagement
During the early years in New Zealand, men and women would often marry at a young age. Women were expected to have babies and remain in the home caring for their children. Few, if any, left home in search of work. Men, on the other hand, were expected to work outside of the home.

These days, we don’t have the same strict expectations about work. Girls and boys can choose their own path in life. In fact, I was lucky enough to go to university and to follow my dream of becoming a teacher!

What is your dream job? Draw a picture of yourself doing your dream job and post it on your blog. You could be a doctor, an actor or even a zookeeper! I have drawn myself taking a picture of a beautiful castle in Poland because I would love to become a travel blogger and photographer one day.

Dream Job
I have a few decisions but my main dream job that I work at NASA. I really like to know about our solar system and beyond. It is really fun researching about space. I would really be an astronaut.

Bonus Activity: Special Meals

Back in the 1800s, most Māori ate a simple diet. They ate foods that they could catch in the water (eg. fish) or grow on the land (eg. kumara). They did not have access to a supermarket to buy food for their meals! Speaking of meals, what is your favourite meal? Mine is wood-fired pizza. Yum!

On your blog, post a picture of your favourite meal. Be sure to tell us what it is and why it is your favourite. You could also include the recipe if you have it so that we can all try it!

I have heaps of favourite meals, I couldn't choose one so my favourite meal is Pizza.

Summer Learning Journey 2017 | Week 1 - Day 1

We are doing an activity named the Summer Learning Journey. We had to get information from the site and write about it. So for the first week our topic is about the early times when the Maori came to New Zealand. I hope you like my post. Hope you comment down below. Have a cool day!! Bye!!

In the Beginning (1800 - 1870)
Day 1 - Arriving in New Zealand

Activity 1 | The first Settlers

It is widely believed that the first people to arrive in New Zealand came from Polynesia. Most historians believe that they landed in New Zealand over 700 years ago. Although they were originally from many different countries, these settlers learned to live together and, eventually, formed their own distinct culture known as ‘Māori.’  Māori have their own language, traditions, and culture.

Follow this link to read a short story about a famous man in Māori mythology – Maui. On your blog, post three facts that you learned about this interesting man. What other stories have you heard about Maui?

- Maui has a fishhook that is made out of a jawbone his ancestor.

- While Maui was fishing, the canoe he was in with his brothers is now known as the South Island of New Zealand, and the fish he caught with his hook is the North Island.

- Whenever Maui says his old karakia, it always helps him in hard situations.

Other Stories | Maui

- Maui and the Sun

Activity 2 | Setting Sail

The first settlers to come to New Zealand must have been really brave! They had to leave their original homes and sail thousands of miles across the ocean on a special boat called a ‘waka’ to reach New Zealand.

Imagine that you were on board one of the wakas. On your blog, write a short letter to a friend telling them about your voyage to New Zealand. In the letter be sure to tell them how you feel about moving to a new country. If it was me, I would have felt really nervous…

Dear Axle,
It will be arriving at New Zealand. It is a new country that I found. When my friend tells reminds me that we are going to a new place I feel excited and nervous. I was thinking that when you send a letter to me I would be revealed. Wish my good luck!. Bye!!
From Khush

Bonus Activity | Waka Ama
To this day, the people of New Zealand still use waka. Instead of using their waka to transport them from one place to another, they sometimes use waka in special events and in sporting competitions such as Waka Ama. Both boys and girls compete in Waka Ama boat races.

waka-ama-40461.jpg
Watch this short video of a Waka Ama race. On your blog tell us whether you would like to be in a Waka Ama race one day. Why or why not?

For my opinion I wouldn't do the Waka Ama. You need heaps of strength and muscles. However it is a awesome sport to take part.

Let's Jump and Swim!

Today was Trekkers Big Day Out. The activities for today was to go to Mega Air and Jellie Park. It was out first time at Jellie Park for EOTC Week. It was really fun there. Last year for Trekkers Big Day Out we went to Mega Air and we did Top Team in out school field. The weather for today was hot, it went to 30.1 degrees celsius in Jellie Park.

9:10am
We had been to 2 groups. I was in the 1st group. So group 1 went to Mega Air first. When we reached at Mega Air and we were allowed to go, I straightaway went near the Alps (not the real Alps at Europe). It was fun jumping up to the boxes. After sometime I went to the Air Bag. It had been few months since I had been on the Air Bag. I decided to play dodgeball after jumping off the Air Bag. We went back to the Alps and tried to jump to the top. It was really fun jumping up and down the boxes. I was so hot that I had to sit near the cold fan. It was so nice and refreshing. I went to play dodgeball again. It was a bit fun than last time because, I met Axle in a team, so I joined that team. We hit heaps of people. It was really fun. After dodgeball I wanted to play Basketball, because I haven't played it for a long time. I went to Basketball and again saw Axle and Vann. I said to have a competition against each other. I was in Axle's team also. Vann had the smaller size, so it was easier for him. On the first go it was my turn. I shot it up and it went above the board and it landed on the net behind the hoops. I climbed up and got the ball and passed it to Axle. He had some shots and he got 2 in the hoop. After those shots he gave me the ball. I had 1 or 2 misses and I had 3 shots in a row. When I was looking at a game of Dodgeball I saw the other group looking at a video of the rules of Mega Air. The teacher called us to a space where we met. We got out shoes and lined up. We walked back to class and had our morning tea.

Next the teacher said that we are watching a movie until the other group have came back. They were watching 'Arthur's Christmas'. I was bored because we had seen this movie. I went to the other class to have a see and I saw Axle getting one of the games to play. Axle was finding the game 'Uno'. I was really good to play Uno but actually Axle was better than me. But we still had a game of Uno. It was really fun. After the round Vann and Lyan joined the game also. It was a interesting game. But at the end I won. When we finished the round it was time to go on the bus to Jellie Park. We went to the bus and went to Jellie Park.

When we arrived at Jellie Park we went in a huge line and got our tags for the hydroslide. I thought that we are going from the front entrance. But when we moved we went behind the building and went where the gate was open for us. We went behind the trees and went to a place where we could put our bags and place the gazebos. The teacher said to get changed. My friends said to go to the hydroslide first. I was really excited for the hydroslide. There was a huge line when we were waiting to go on the hydroslide. It took a long time to reach at the top. We decided to go to the snakey (one of the side to side slides, that's what we called it). When we reached at the top and decided that I would go first and then my friends will go. It was really fun and entertaining when I went, it reminded me of a slide in Hanmer Springs. I was going quite slow than I expected. I didn't even recognized but my friend bumped into me. I went much faster. We went to the hydroslide again and again. On our 7th time we went to the other slide that goes straight and fast. My friend and I had a race together. I pushed the side of the slide to go faster. When I was going to finish the water started coming up to me because I was going too fast. I landed on time when I thought that I won. I did a flip by accident. But my friend said that he won. We didn't know who won or not. We went again and again when my friend said that "let's do something else". I said to go to the huge hydroslide. But he took me to a 1.5m pool. He said that the pool was a bit warm. I went in the pool and said to have a running race. It took like 7 minutes to reach the end, it took a long time. The race was edge to edge race. But I went faster and won. My friend said to race back to the starting, my thigh was hurting because of the running. But I said to do a random swimming race. I tried to do some strokes but it didn't work. But after I thought to do dolphin dives to go further. I tried to do it and I went further than usual. But my friend was catching up to me. He was far away and I won. My friend said to go back to the hydroslide. The line was going faster than usual. But when we went to the middle we went slowly. But we finaly reached to the top and met our friends. Now this time I was last and my other friends would go ahead of me, we holded our friends shoulders and went off. After we had finished our 8th go we saw some people having their lunch. The teachers said to change and eat your lunch. We changed and ate our lunch. After eating our lunch the teachers seperated the people who were in the 1st bus and 2nd bus. We lined up and went to the bus. Last time we were in the 2nd bus and we changed to the 1st bus. We went back to school. It was a great time at Mega Air and Jellie Park. I hope you like my post about the Trekkers Day Out. Tomorrow we are going to do Sailing. Have a cool day!! Bye!!

Being a Surfer!

As I told you yesterday we are going to Surf at Sumner. We had a great time there. It was 28°C, we were really hot out there. Last year we had done surfing in the first activity. It all started when...

At our classroom the teacher gave us a number on our hands for our groups. There was 3 groups for surfing. I was in group 2. We went on the bus to Sumner. I was feeling quite tired so I went to sleep. The drive was about half an hour to reach Sumner. We got in our class lines and put our bags under the tents. After putting the bags in the tent we sat on the white mat to listen to the instructors. They thought us the parts of the board and what to do, etc. Last time I had done surfing it was one of the worst surfing times that I had, because it was my first time. Group 1 and 2 lined up to get their wetsuits. After getting changed group 1 went to the beach to to surfing. We have a 20-25 minute session. Meanwhile, I was bored and wanted to do something. When I was thinking my friend asked me to play with a tennis ball. We played catches. It was fun playing around. When we were playing we saw the Crusaders (I think so) going for a surf. We didn't recognized how fast group 1 had finished their session. We lined up to go to the beach. The instructor said to lie on your tummies and reminded us the surfing position. After doing some practice we got our boards and went out to surf. The tide was high so the energy for the waves would be fast. I was excited to do surfing. After doing one try, I thought that it is quite similar to body boarding but a bit different. Doing surfing is a bit better than body boarding because the board is longer and easy to ride on. But it came to the end of our surfing time, but after group 3 and 1 we are going again to the sea to do body boarding.

We started to lie on our tummies and did that same drill and then we went out to the sea. I started near the shore for a start. But then the teacher said to go further. I went further trying to find any big waves. After a few small waves past a big wave went and I went fast as a jet boat (not that fast, but really fast). After some tries I went a bit deeper into the sea. There was one when it felt like that the wave pushed me up and I was flying for 1 or 2 seconds. It was awesome. I was more excited about doing body boarding. I went deeper until it reached under my shoulders. I tried to push myself to the shore. But it didn't work for me, I thought it would work next time I find another wave. The instructor said 2 more turns left until it will finish. On my first one it was a big wave, I didn't went up or like that but when the wave pushed me it felt quite weird (I don't know why?). I landed but on the ground. The salty water went in my mouth (Yuck!). Also that happened that same thing in my last go. It wasn't a big wave and I hit the ground. But it was a good last time lesson surf swim for me. I was really happy. We were having so fun at the sea that we didn't recognized how fast the time went. When we were going back to the tents there was a tsunami warning alarm. The instructor said that it was the sea rescue. We were all thinking 'what is even going on?' When we went back we heard that there were 3 random people stuck in a rip! There was a fire engine and a helicopter 🚁 flying over the sky. We got the notice that there was 2 people save in the rip and we didn't know about the other one person stuck in a rip. But that was good that none of the students were caught in a rip. We had to get ready fast because we had to eat lunch.

After getting ready we had some time to have a eat and rest. For lunch there was fish 'n chips. I just ate only chips. We had a nice and full lunch, we were ready to go back to school. We packed our stuff and went on the bus. We were all talking and having fun back to school. We had a good time at Sumner. On Monday we are having a Trekkers Day Out, so we are doing Mega Air (like last time) and Jelly Park. It will be fun at Jelly Park because we haven't been there for EOTC Week before. I hope you have a cool 😎 day/week. Bye!!
