Were Back!! - Day 5

On the fifth day, we went back to Christchurch. This is what happened...

At 4:00 pm we arrived at Wellington Domestic Airport for our flight. We checked-in and sat at the gate, waiting for the flight. Before we went by the gate we ate Subway because we wanted to eat something. We went by to the same Subway when we arrived at Wellington. I ate a 6-inch Subway. It was yum! At the gate, we waited for the plane. There were 10 minutes till we boarded.

After 10 minutes...

The plane was delayed, 10 minutes late. We waited another 10 minutes until the plane would come.

After another 10 minutes...

The plane was here and we went to the plane. Our seat was near the front. We waited for another few minutes until we departed. We departed at 6:10 pm. We arrived at Christchurch really fast. We arrived at Christchurch safely and I was relieved that we arrived. It was an awesome trip to Rotorua. It was really fun. My favourite places were Wai-O-Tapu and the Waitomo Glowworm Caves.

Comment down if you've been to Rotorua before and if you want to. Also comment down if you like this post. Have a cool day!! Bye!!

Summer Leaning Journey 2017-18 | Week 4 | Day 5

Contemporary Kiwis
Day 5 - Looking into the future (2000 - Present)

Activity 1 | Your future self

It may be hard to imagine, but one day you will graduate from high school and it will be time to decide what to do next. You may want to study at university, become an apprentice, go to training college, travel, or start working. There are so many options!

Take a minute to think about your future. What would you like to do when you finish school? Would you like to work in a specific job? Would you like to study at university? What would you study? Maybe you’d even like to move overseas. Share your thoughts and ideas on your blog site. There are no wrong answers!

The Future

When I finish school, I want to study at university but also have a part-time job. While at university I want to study Science along with Solar System.
I want to work at NASA.

Activity 2 | Flying Cars

hummer.pngLet’s imagine that you’ve just learned to drive, and your family has decided to buy you a brand new car. You are allowed to choose from any of the following designs:

I would go for the second car. It is really good for the mountains and really good for travelling.

Summer Leaning Journey 2017-18 | Week 3 | Day 5

Activity 1: Hiking Tongariro
tongariro.jpg
In 1990, one of the largest national parks in New Zealand, Tongariro, was listed as a World Heritage Site. It is a truly spectacular place to visit! Thousands of people go to Tongariro every year and hike the Tongariro Crossing. Visit the Tongariro website to learn more about the one-day hike.

On your blog tell us what you would need to pack if you were going to hike the Tongariro Crossing. What should you bring with you? Write a list of at least 5 items.

  1. Navigation
  2. Sun Protection
  3. Food and Water
  4. Flashlight with extra batteries and First-Aid Kit.

Other than making sure that you have the right equipment, what else should you do before heading out on a big hike? Click here to learn how to stay safe while you’re hiking.

Activity 2: Leading New Zealand
In the 1990s, four different individuals served as the Prime Minister of New Zealand – Geoffrey Palmer, Mike Moore, Jim Bolger and Jenny Shipley.

On your blog, write a short profile of one of our former Prime Ministers. Upload a photo of them with your post. Click on this link to find a copy of the template. Click on file and then click make a copy. This will save the blank template to your Google Drive so that you can fill it in. Post the completed template to your blog to earn points for this activity.

Bonus Activity: You Have to Pay to Play

In 1990, for the first time in New Zealand’s history, universities and polytechnics started charging students money to go to school. Prior to then, it had been free to go to university or to a polytechnic. Since 1990, students have had to pay thousands of dollars to attend post-secondary (after high school) education.

The new Labour government have promised to give up to three years of free post-secondary education to all New Zealanders by 2020!

On your blog, tell us what you think. Should students have to pay money (tuition fees) to go to university? Why or why not?

I think that they have tuition fees because it would be no use of giving tuition if there is no fees.
But for school or university, I think that the school or university have not enough money for the whole school or university.

Summer Leaning Journey 2017 | Week 2 | Day 5

A Period of Change (1870 - 1950)

Day 5 - Coming to an end

Activity 1 | VE Day!
After six long years of fighting, World War II finally came to an end in 1945. The entire country was ecstatic and parties were thrown all over New Zealand to celebrate VE Day (Victory in Europe). Imagine that you were living in New Zealand in 1945 and you had to plan a VE day party at your house. Who would you invite? What would you do to celebrate?

On your blog, tell us all about your (imaginary) VE party. If it was me, I would invite all of my closest friends and family over to my house for a big barbecue. We would eat hamburgers and play basketball in the driveway. Some of us would probably walk to the local beach to play soccer on the beach and to go for a swim (if the weather was warm enough)!

I would invite my friends and family.
I would play games like cricket or soccer.

Activity 2 | Making a Fashion Statement
In the years following World War II, things slowly returned to normal in New Zealand. Soldiers returned home and settled back into regular life; and national sporting teams, like the New Zealand cricket team, got back together and started playing matches again. In the late 1940s, men and women would go to watch these events, men wearing hats and suits and women wearing dresses, hats, and gloves.

Compare the pictures of common clothing from the late 1940s to what you wear now (i.e. in 2017). Are they similar or are they quite different?

On your blog tell us which of the two styles you prefer and why. The pictures above were taken over 65 years ago! What do you think people will be wearing 65 years from now?

I would prefer the latest version because it looks a bit good than the old version.

Bonus Activity | Sweet Tooth

When World War II ended, a number of people from Europe moved to New Zealand looking for a peaceful place to live and raise a family. When they came, they brought recipes and foods from their native countries with them, including hamburgers, pizza and other delicious foods.

I usually have a chocolate chip cookie with my tea. I love biscuits! What is your favourite sweet treat or dessert? Use google to find a recipe for it. Type the recipe out on your blog. Make sure you also include a picture.

      Summer Leaning Journey 2017 | Week 1 | Day 5

      In the beginning (1800 - 1870)
Day 5 - The Dawn of an New Era...

From the 1840s onwards, many European settlers came to live in New Zealand. It was a difficult period in New Zealand’s history. As the settlers began to outnumber the Māori, a great war erupted between the two groups as they fought for access to land to build homes and establish communities.

      Activity 1 | Translating Phrases

Unlike the Māori, many of the European settlers didn’t speak Te Reo Māori. Instead, they spoke English. As you can imagine, it was very difficult for the two groups to communicate because they did not have a dictionary or a translator. These days we are able to use the Internet to translate words and phrases from one language to another.

Use Google Translate to translate the following five phrases from English to Te Reo Māori or from Te Reo Māori to English. Post the translations on your blog. Be sure to include the phrase in both the English and Māori to earn full points.

      Phrases:
      Maori

      1. Nau mai ki Aotearoa.
      2. Ko Khush toku ingoa.
      3. He aha to ingoa?
      4. I like to play rugby.
      5. No hea koe?

      English
      1. Welcome to New Zealand.
      2. Khush is my name.
      3. What is your name?
      4. Where do you come from
Activity 2: The Treaty of Waitangi
On 6 February 1840, a very special document was signed by the Māori chiefs and the British settlers in New Zealand. It was called the Treaty of Waitangi (Te Tiriti o Waitangi) and it outlined how the two groups would live together and work together in New Zealand. It was the first document of its kind to be signed in the entire world. The Treaty was signed in a place called Waitangi in northern New Zealand.

Follow this Waitangi village link to read about the village of Waitangi.

On your blog, tell us three fun things that you can do as a visitor in Waitangi. Which one would you like to do the most?

      Melbourne - Australia - Day 5

This is my fifth day at Melbourne. I have less than 2 days at Melbourne. I will tell you what I have done today.

Image result for melbourne river cruises
      Melbourne River Cruises
It was late in the morning. At 10:50 A.M we decided to go to the Melbourne River Cruises. It was going to be fun. It took some time to reach over there. But it didn't took time from the bridge to the cruise 🛥️. We parked opposite Kings Way at the Crown and had Subway before getting out of the Crown. When I went near the cruise, it was really smaller than I thought. We had Subway for lunch. It was yum!!

After eating, we went outside and took photos 📸 together. We saw some cool places like, MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground 🏟️), Olympic Park, Melbourne ParkAAMI Park 🏟️ and Rod Laver Arena. The mini cruise went through Yarra River. It was a great view. Did you know: MCG is the largest Cricket Ground in the world - with 100,024 capacity (MCG is not a stadium for Cricket, it is a stadium for AFL - Australian Football League, Rugby League and even Baseball !). Let's go back to the topic. It wasn't a long ride. After getting of the mini cruise we went to ACMI for a look.

We climbed up the stairs and looked around. First we saw pom-pom trees (hanged pom-poms). Then we saw a visitor centre at Federation Square. We went inside the visitor centre and went down in the lift to the basement. When we went inside the basement there was heaps of maps around the basement. There were the maps of Melbourne and surrounding places. We went out of the basement to the top, my dad's friend decided to go to the tram 🚎. We crossed St Kilda Street and Flinders Street. At the station we saw that only 3 different tram numbers come to this station, 35 (City Circle), 70 (Waterfront Docklands), and 73 (Etihad Stadium). We decided to go around the city central and picked the tram 🚊35. "We missed the tram." I said. Now we had to wait for 12 minutes for the tram.

      After 12 minutes...

At 3:13 P.M the tram arrived to the station. It was a hot day (After one train leaves from a station one other train comes from the other side of the tram number 35.) so there was heaps of noise of the tracks and the wheel. The tram goes from Melbourne Central (of course) and Docklands near the port. The driver switches sides at Docklands because it was the end at Docklands. These are the roads/streets that we had been, Flinders Street, Wurundjeri Way, Collins Street, Harbor Esplanade, La Trobe Street, Victoria Street, Spring Street and Wellington Parade. It took 50 minutes in the tram 🚊= we arrived at 4:03 P.M We stopped at the wrong station, we went out of the train one station early. Then my dad's friend said that we can go to the Sea Life Aquarium. At the reception desk the lady said that the penguins are going to sleep so go there quickly. When we went to the Penguin playground the Penguins were walking around and nearly going to sleep. There were some other people already there looking and taking photos of the Penguins. So we took photos as well. There were Penguins there like King Penguins and Gentoo Penguins.

Then the next place to visit, the Crocodile Cork. The Sea Life Aquarium is much larger than the aquarium in Auckland. When we reached on top of Crocodile Cork the Crocodile was huge from the top. The Crocodile was sleeping. Behind there was animals like Turtles, Snakes and Green Pythons. Here are the animals/Sea Animals that we saw,

      Coral Atoll

Southern Blue Tang, multicoloured fish, Moray Eeels, and other Sea Animals.

      Coral Caves

      Clownfish and Moon Jellies.

      Mermaid Garden

Grey Nurse Shark, Smooth Stingray and Queensland Groper.

      Seahorse Pier

      Giant Cuttlefish and Sea Dragons.

      Rainforest Adventure

Lungfish, Sea Turtles and Lizards and Spiders.

      Penguin Playground

      King Penguins and Gentoo Penguins.

      Bay Of Rays

      Port Jackson Shark

      Others

Sawfish, Stingrays, Shark Ray, White Spotted Eagle Ray, Giant Smooth Ray, Lungfish, Archerfish, Boyd’s Forest Dragon, Sea Star, Seahorse, Leafy Sea Dragons, Giant Cuttlefish, Pinjarra (the mega crocodile), Blacktip Reef Shark and Whitetip Reef Shark.

On the side there was a stair that leads down near the Pinjarra (the mega crocodile). When we came near some people made noise and made the Pinjarra awake. Then his/her right foot stood up. There we see fishes swim under the Pinjarra. Then we went to the next place. I have seen animals that I haven't seen in my life before. After looking at the Animals and the Sea Animals we went outside the building and walked back to the Crown. We were in the Sea Life Aquarium for about 1 hour and 30 minutes. We decided to have dinner at Crowns.

At 6:00 P.M we had dinner at Tandoors - Crown. Today I have been to 4 places the Crown, Melbourne River Cruises, the 35 tram, and the Sea Life Aquarium. After dinner we went back home. I've seen heaps of things today. We arrived back home around 7:00 P.M. I have less than 3 days in Melbourne left. I think that tomorrow I won't do anything fun.

I hope you like my post. Have a cool 😎 day!! Bye!!
